Just bought a Canon 24-105 mm lens. The performance of the IS is erratic. Test results of on/off comparison show that IS is not reliable. I can hear the mechanism engage but photos in low light settings some times show the effect and sometimes don't. I'm wondering if should replace the lens. Anyone else have this problem with IS reliability on this lens?

No problems with mine. The stabilisation is very noticeable in the viewfinder at 105mm, so if you've got a problem, it should easy to see.

IS is not a miracle cure for low light,if you are having the most trouble there it could just be the shutter speed is not fast enough. Everyone has a different threshold for what they can hand hold.

Can you post examples of when you think it works and when you think it does not.

Also, zoom out to 105mm, shut the IS off, press the shutter halfway and see how your target looks in the viewfinder. Then turn on the IS and do the same. You should see a difference after the IS engages.

Thanks for your help. At 105 IS effect is very noticeble, as you say, and consistant. I was shooting at much shorter focal lengths and closer subjects. So that was the test I was looking for. Appreciate the insight.
