50L or 85L II? Poll it up~

When people can understand internet poll is practically useless?

50L, I picked up one a couple months ago and haven't looked back at all. It's a fantastic lens and perfect for the crop frame of my 7D

Back to Q&A, seem to me every single Conscious Shooters in POTN get a Sigma 50 f/1.4 or Canon 85 f/1.8 as they are 'much better'

Since I am not a fan of 50mm on a FF, I vote 85.

There are better 50mms out there than the Canon L one, for instance, the Zeiss 50mm f/2 MP.

The 85 f/1.8 is not better than the 85L, it is just faster in terms of AF and cheaper. And for the sigma 50 f/1.4, I have bad luck with that lens myself. Tried. 3 copies, none of them work properly, that's why it is called sigma lottery.

For me 85mm is my normal lens. I shot with only 50mm lenses for 22 years before adding other focal lengths. I always found 50mm to be an awkward focal length at least for me it was....good for snap shots but hard to compose good images other wise. A little over a year ago I bought both the 50L and 85L II with Canons Summer rebates. I kept the 85L and returned the 50L. I would have kept the 50L but it had a focus shift that I just could not live with and comparing it to my 50 1.4 I could not tell a nickles worth of difference in sharpness. For over 32 years I have always had a 50mm prime lens and probably always will but in the past 10 years it is just not a focal length I use much. I may one day repurchase a 50L just to say I have one but for now it is just not that high of priority on my future lens list.

The 50L is better at the 50mm focal length and the 85L is better at the 85mm focal length. Since I already own both lenses and have plenty of Wal-Mart bags to carry my equipment around in, I voted for the Rocket Blower. As everyone knows, one can never have enough blowers.

I voted for the 85. I don't have either nor can afford them but, what the heck, it's a poll

I've used both. Love the 85L II.

Get the 85L II if you want best IQ, best looking bokeh, and razor sharp images at f/1.2. It is also more reliable than the 50L in terms of focus accuracy, and it doesn't suffer from the pesky focus shift issue.

That said, the 50L is still a nice lens. Just not as good as the 85.

But I should warn you that that the 85L II has a very slow AF. I can live with that, but can you?
