Nice, but more DOF would be helpful. Remember that in Macro mode, DOF is razor think, even at f8

Razor thinking this through, it is pretty hard to stack a live feeding bee without some serious hardware.
As is it is a nice capture. Using an aperture of f16 and flash might help.

Thanks for the tips. I'll experiment with f 16 and flash.

Chauncey tell us how to do this with a live bee. Thanks.

The DOF with this lens on a FF frame camera is a real challenge. When it's nails, though, it's really nails ;). It took a while for me to get used to visualising how to make the DOF to work with the shot instead of against it.

I like this shot. Selective focus is OK in macro, but the subject (bee?) should always be tack sharp. As is, some of the bee and some of the flower are sharp, which makes me wonder what to look at.

To me it looks like the right amount of bee and flower in focus for this angle. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to be looking at both the flower and bee, with the interaction of the 2 being the subject. Just my take on it. :)

Very cool, but your brightness in this photograph has about 1/3-1/2 more stop needed to make this an adequate screne. I like your cropping and focus on the bee! Incredible! How are you liking the 100mm?

Really awesome shot IMO! I like everything about it. I agree it is slightly under exposed. I might back the vignetting off just a little but that's personal taste.

I don't think the whole bee needs to be in focus for this to work. It works how it is, very well! Love the bee sucking for the pollen. Also the angle works well to give it some action feeling. Really good shot :)

Thanks for the observations. I made a few changes.

I love this lens. It is very unassuming when you first pick it up, but once you put it on your camera it definitely lives up to its awesome reputation! Lots of fun to work with and a little bit of a challenge working with such shallow DOF.
