The price point on the Kindle Fire HD you were wondering about:
Old news man, they announced that hours ago.
It's pretty good pricing... if it's still Amazon's own OS I'm not really interested... but it certainly mixes up the tablet market.

Consider it optimized for the hardware... pretty much like every other major player out there. Samsung and the others have fiddled with the source code to their liking.

I'll wait for some reviews to come out, but the price point for the tablets is certainly good.

November 20 release date? Apple announces ipad mini in october and makes them available a week later. Sells millions before the kindle hd can hit store shelves. It's not that good? I've been using a Fire since February, and I'm more than happy with it.

I have more complaints about the hardware (or lack thereof--camera, dedicated volume buttons, power button placement, etc).I know multiple people who had fires and disliked them greatly. Quite frankly most android builds go to crap once the hardware manufacturers get their hands on it...

About a year ago I bought a cheapo tablet with stock android, and it was pure crap. Slow as hell, couldn't play anything. Most functions didn't work, and it didn't even have the proper drivers for the wifi module. I put ice cream sandwich on my hp touchpad using the cyanogen mod, and it wasn't much better. Couldn't play videos. Couldn't install or run any game apps. So yeah, I'll take the devices that have been heavily supported, thanks. Stock android gives me that "running linux" feeling.

After reading the release info, I'll take a new kindle over an ipad. I'm conflicted over taking the 9" model with the $50 annual data plan, vs the HD 7" model. I really, really like the portability of the 7", especially when out shooting birds. I've got 3 birding apps on my Kindle Fire

I was wondering what Zeiss was working on next. I wonder why a 55mm instead of just re-doing their 1.4/50? Probably better sharpness wide open.
