They are sort of handheld. To be more specific since I started shooting more and more between 1:1 and 2:1, I found I did need some form of stabilisation. I get this from an amazingly high tech 7 foot metal bean pole I had laying round in the garden. I just grip the bean pole in my left hand together with the handle of the flash bracket on my camera. This stabilises the camera well but is still very adaptable. It also means I don't need the remote cable release I was using to stop camera rotation when pressing the shutter button. So it's kind of an amazingly quick to setup monopod
