Hi I have a friend who has a metz 45ct-1 flash unit, he is using a slave to fire the unit using his 350d, his question is what settings would he need to use on the flash for portrait photography when bounced from a brolly.
hope this makes sense.

cheers

Mark

Thanks

Mark

I'm afraid only your friend can answer that question. He can either use a flash meter (the easiest) or he can use his histogram on the camera to check the exposure (may take several trial-and-error attempts).

BTW, aren't you supposed to shoot the flash through a brolly instead of bounching the flash off of it?

Hi looks like it's trial & error then he's not got a light meter.
I've always seen photos taken with a bounced flash with a brolly, might be worth trying your way.

Mark

PacAce...

It depends if you are using it as a reflective brolly or as a diffuser.

You'd need a very bright flash to shoot through a silver brolly with a black cover.....

LOL

I've only seen the Alien Bees brollies and they mount the heads through the reflective side so that the lights shoot through the white panel like soft boxes. But I guess they could also make it so that the head could be mounted through the white panel side, huh? [Edit: Just did a google search and saw that the Lastolite umbrella boxes are made this way. Live and learn! :)]
