Started with the 350d and love it, but wanting to get something a little better in relation to megapixel, features amd LCD screen.

The more I look the more confused I get about which camera to look at. 60d is the one that has jumped out as best value for money but wanting other opinions. My budget is around 1k which will really close the choices right down I know but this is a little hobby and I have to justify the expenditure.

Thoughts and recommendations?

I would say stick with the xxxd line and go with the 550d (Rebel T2i in the US). You'll get the latest 18meg sensor, a very nice LCD screen, and still have money left for a grip and a cheap macro lens. For that, I would suggest the Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Lens. It's not a true macro, but it's only $200 new here in the US, and the IQ is very good.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

Go with the 60D. Then buy Tamron 90mm f/2.8 or Samyang 85mm f/1.4 and you will rock.

You could go with the 40D or 50D and still use your CF cards. If you go with the 60D or any of the Rebels, you will also have to buy SD cards.

the 550D (T2i) is still pretty good - ISO, Video, megapixels, etc. around $400 or the 60D - $640 on the CLP program
leaves room in the budget for lens

I also recently upgraded from a 350D. I ended up getting a 5D because I wanted full-frame.

I say you get another rebel as well. They're the best value IMO. I feel that with a 60D, you're just paying for more plastic.

If I were to get another APS-C DSLR, I'd get the latest rebel (650D/T41) without hesitation. I generally try to look for the smallest body for a given sensor size.

I agree with everyone here. Either a refurbished/lightly used 40D or 50D or a newer Rebel. The 60D is great ergonomically but I wonder if you are paying more for that and a fancy screen articulation.

60D gets you the best bang for your buck. T4i is tempting if you are into video.

For around 1k I would look for a used 7D. One for sale in the Classifieds right now, ~4200 actuations for $1025.

What type of photos do you take? Do you do a lot of landscapes, or portraits, or sports, etc? Would you like to have the video feature? Also is weight or size important to you?

Votes for the 40d/50d are all well and good, but they're getting to be quite old cameras now, especially if the 70d is round the corner as rumored. Something like the 650d will outperform the 40d and 50d in terms of high ISO noise, for example. Obviously the xx0d series don't have some of the additional features of the x0d series, however, the OP might not be interested in those...

Maybe you could elaborate a little more on what you want out of the new camera in terms of features? MP and better screens are a given in any of the modern cameras really.

+1 or stretch just a bit more to a 1D3

If you upgrade to another Rebel, cut your costs and just grab a used T2i/550D for $300-$350. Don't spend $800+ on a Rebel when you already have one -- the jump isn't great enough to justify the cost, IMO.

The 40d/50d are great cameras. It produces wonderful images then and no reason why it shouldn't now. Heck there are still tons of love for the 5dc! It is so old now that today's dslr noobies look at it funny wondering where is Live View and video mode! ;)

I have a 50d so you're preaching to the converted :) I just think for someone coming from a 350d would potentially really appreciate the enhancements and features the newer bodies have, but that's just my opinion of course... I will also be using a 5dc tomorrow with my 50d as backup, they really are great cameras still as you say :)

I consider the 40D as one of the best buys on the used camera market.

I upgraded from a 350D to a 30D and it was a considerable advancment in capability. However, the 40D with good glass is a much greater upgrade than the 30D.

See my China smugmug.com galleries at the link below. All images were shot with a combination of 30D and 40D cameras using a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses.

BTW: I still shoot with a 40D and combine it with a 7D...
