I consider the 40D as one of the best buys on the used camera market.

I upgraded from a 350D to a 30D and it was a considerable advancment in capability. However, the 40D with good glass is a much greater upgrade than the 30D.

See my China smugmug.com galleries at the link below. All images were shot with a combination of 30D and 40D cameras using a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses.

BTW: I still shoot with a 40D and combine it with a 7D...

Go for a 40D...still using mine.

Go for the gusto. Drive this year's model.
Depending upon exactly what you wanted out of a camera- consider a t4i, 7D, or 60D... You only live once, may as well do it in style.

The t4i has the advantages of being the newest- and employing some of the newer featuresets in Canon cameras. Otherwise, the 60D if you prefer the flip screen, and ergonomics of a larger body or 7D if you want the sophisticated AF system & raw speed that it delivers & its wonderful feeling mag body. Reality is none of them will let you down- You only upgrade bodies once in a blue moon- apparently true for you- so may as well make it worthwhile.

EOS 5D III, EOS 7D,EOS Rebel T4i, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, Canon 24-105L, Canon 18-135 IS STM, 1.4x TC III, 2.0x TC III, Σ 50mm f/1.4, Σ 17-50 OS, Σ 70-200 OS, Σ 50-500 OS, Σ 1.4x TC, Σ 2.0x TC, 580EXII(3), Canon SX-40, Canon S100
Fond memories: Rebel T1i, Canon 18-55 IS, Canon 55-250 IS, 18-135 IS (Given to a good home)...

Great selection of responses here and my god I appreciate all the input. Video isnt really as big thing for me as I have a video camera and I have to face the fact that at best I am a hobby shooter with little talent, so probably not worth trying to buy an uber camera, as that would be a waste.

Only thing I want to really improve other than ISO is the mega pixel, when cropping and resizing I am really noticing the resolution. Its a great camera, I just want to improve it.

More input guys?

More mp? Then it's 5DMk3.. both 60D, 650D, 7D use 18mp sensor, only difference is the Digic 5 processor in 650D.

Bear in mind the camera I am using is only like 8mp so I want a large improvement if possible.

Cant justify going ff with the newer cameras and want to retain my current glass.....at least till I put my daughter through university starting next year.

I'd say go for a 50D if you can afford it, if not the 40D, the bonus being they also use CF cards, staying with the Rebel series will entail a change to SD cards. The handling of either the 40/50D is also better than the rebel series, back dial etc. A big change for me when I swapped to the 7D, still have my 350D though as still a great little camera.

Not sure if you used this before but:

It's a comparison tool that helps you compare your candidates.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have the 650!

Best of luck with your decision.

if that's the criteria and $1k is the budget then 60D, 550D, etc. are probably your better choices unless you want the extra features of the 7D or 650D.

The t4i also has the flip out screen, so that should not be a consideration between the t4i and 60d. Take a look at the t4i, sounds like a very nice camera.
