Hi all,

I'm not a pro and only take pictures for fun. I took some pictures of cars at a local car show the other day and uploaded to my Flickr account.

Today when I was looking at my stats I noticed that one of the referrers was

http://www.toyota-celica-parts.com/toyota-celica-jdm-parts (external link)

I followed the link and there are three of my pictures as thumbnails and clickable, returning to my Flickr.

There seems to be a disclaimer:

All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective owners. Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or complaints.

Is this a get ou clause? Not overly fussed and in some ways a bit flattered. 2 of the 3 photos are not of a celica so they must be using some sort of search program.

Cheers,

Aidan

There's generally nothing wrong with embedding peoples images, if you don't want them to turn on protection. I host on my own server and I prevent hotlinking.

How do you prevent the hotlinking, please?

On flickr? No idea, not even sure it's possible. I said I do it on my own server, I have control over it, you do it with an htaccess file. Google it (external link).

I'm sure a simple phone call or email would get them to take it down, but why do that? You weren't planning on selling the images, and it's probably getting a bit of traffic to your Flickr page, so where's the harm. Yes, they should have asked, but as an old advertizing guy once told me, it's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting indeed. I think I would have been more sympathetic if it had been a "not for profit" blogger, rather than a business.

I do completely get the other side of the argument about bringing more traffic etc however.

I'm going to think on it for a couple of days before I do anything.

Aidan

So you shared your images on a sharing site and now you are upset that someone was kind enough to link back to your sharing site instead of just stealing the image. You have even labeled the image so that a word search will pull them out from the billions of other images that might have a title like IMG-1473. Consider it the sincerest form of flattery and move on. Write a nice email and thank them for enjoying your picture. Maybe they have a part or something you need and will offer free shipping.
