Got this the other night, but it went below my horizon before I could finish the RGB. Thought I'd post the Ha in the meantime. I've never imaged M17 before, and it's bright core is a bit of a challenge not unlike M42, although to a lesser extent.

I started off with a Skywatcher ED80. Can be bought for a few hundred bucks. You'll need to budget a field flattener though, as there is a bit of curvature in them. The mounts are where it's at, too. Basic starter goto mount with guiding capability runs around $1000-1500. Check out IceInSpace, Aussie-based astro forum.
