Am submitting some photos to a magazine, and their specs are as follows: "Uses 35mm, 2 1/4 x 2/14, 4x5, 8x10 transparencies. Prefers images in digital format RAW data.; Send via CD at 300 dpi.."

Do they want the actual RAW file ? - What's all this with the various sizes and "Transparencies" ??

What do I send?

tks,

r

Rick

The sizes are film sizes.

"Transparencies" are known more commonly as "slides" These were common things when film was the medium of the day. A lot of pro shooters shot "chrome" aka slides... aka transparencies.

Best bet would be to ask them. They will know better than we will.

As far as them needing raw... Most mean unedited jpg. not an actual raw file. This way they can edit it to blend in with the rest of the layout.

If the magazine commissioned you to take shots they may want to edit them in a specific manner - thus they might need RAW.

If you are submitting your images in the hope they will publish (for free or for pay) then you are going to want them to publish your final image - which means a tiff or high res jpg exported from the RAW once all post processing and editing has been done.

Do people really give their RAW files to others? Never really hear of this happening.

And yes, I think they're looking for an unedited raw file in jpg format.

Sounds like they want RAW's. Some companies prefer to work with the raw file, others are OK to work with the JPG. If they've requested RAW's, then give them the RAW's. You still retain the copyright (unless otherwise specified), so I wouldn't worry about about it too much.

I trust corporations with my large files much more than I trust private parties.

Most magazines will only accept unedited images, as they want their art director to be able to edit them to their preferences. This is best accomplished if they have a RAW file to start with, or at least a full res TIFF. Sounds like they're asking for unedited, RAW files, so that's what you should give them. You've gotta play by their rules, or they simply won't consider your images.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
