Looking to upgrade my 15" laptop for a decent pc with a good screen. Tempted by an iMac, but when I look at the spec of the new Dell XPS One 27 it's about half the cost!

It has some pretty good reviews, but I was just wondering if anyone here has seen one in the flesh or used one for editing?

A proper desktop sacrifices portability for performance.
A good laptop sacrifices performance for portability.

A good All In One sacrifices both performance and portability for aesthetics.

What type of panel is used for the Dell you linked to? If it's not IPS you'd be better off with a PC and a good monitor.

The panel is a Samsung PLS one.

Sounds like PLS is similar to IPS except with even higher brightness (which you don't need). I'm not a big fan of all-in-one computers, but it looks like this one could work well as long as you can turn the monitor brightness down low enough and it calibrates nicely. I'd get a bigger SSD though, something around 80 GB. I've taken most things off of my boot drive and I'm always between 40-50GB used space.

For reference, for my Dell eIPS 2209WA monitor I had to turn down brightness to 12-15% for photo editing.

Thank you Bob, if I go down this route I will bear in mind the brightness warning :)

I actually have the XPS One 27. Bought it at the end of June and so far, love it. The clarity of images is fantastic. It is near "retina" resolution. What I have is exactly matching the specs you listed. I have PSE9, LR4, PhotomatixPro4 & Silver Efex Pro 2 loaded on it and all function very well within the Win7 64 bit OS. I use the system exclusively for photography. As for portability, certainly not a laptop but I actually do move it around between 2 rooms! I tuck it under one arm and transport the approx 25 lbs with no difficulty.

I would imagine it uses the same panel as the out going Dell 2711, or the new panel in the incoming 2713 with an sRGB backlight.
The 2711 is a high end monitor intended for people working in design, photography or 3D and CAD and the 2713 maybe replacing it.
It is a very nice panel and calibrates extremely well.

The great problem with All In Ones is you get limited hardware options, very limited ability to upgrade and when the processing hardware becomes out dated you have to throw away your nice monitor as well.

RAZ-7D - Thank you, I was hoping to hear from someone who had 'real life' experience with one :)

I'm pretty sure a fully spec'd one of these will do me for a few years :D

Could you tell me how you calibrated it?
I have a new Dell and the images on the new monitor (edited on my old pc) look overly saturated and too red - see here - http://robynnehayward.zenfolio.com/p142789294 (external link).
They don't look so bad on my work pc.
I have a Huey pantone calibrator (one that you place on the monitor) but the last time I used it on my old pc it made everything go bright magenta, and I've been too scared to use it since.
Is there a calibration tool that works with the Dell One 27 and doesn't cost a fortune?
