Photo is from the filming of a favourite film of mine called Safe House (Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington), the guy in the photo is the Director Daniel Espinso.. but wth is that he is looking through? Is it a modified 5D? Doesent look like a "regular" hollywood digital filmcamera.

NO its not lol. looks like an arricam, which is a popular film camera for major motion picture films. it shoots 35mm film. i think it might be the Arricam Lite looking at the picture closer since the film is located on the back of the camera rather than the top like studio film cameras

Doesent look like a "regular" hollywood digital filmcamera

Which is strange, given that Arri cameras are pretty much the standard for film the world over, including the recent ALEXA which is a digital version of the Arricam.

If anything that is the regular hollywood (digital or not) film camera.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Whats so strange about it? That i have no insight in moviemaking? Do you always assume that everyone knows everything?
Too ME it dident look like a regular filmcamera... too ME it looked like a modified DSLR, hence the topic.

Well what would you normally expect a movie camera to look like? this?

With the exception of modern digital cameras that don't have a shutter/mirror assembly, and particularly the RED cameras, they all look exactly alike.

...But you didn't think "Why would anyone in hollywood use a DSLR, modified or not, when have $100k cameras that can do all that and a million things more?" DSLRs are a recent hit because they're dirt cheap.

Interesting link. Article written by "Kyle Fiechter DSLR Video and Photography Writer", but he isn't more knowledgeable than using the names D5 and D7 for the Canon cameras...

black swan was shot primarily on film. DSLR cameras were used for only a few scenes where space was an issue like on the subway trains

BECAUSE Hollywood have been using DSLRS like 7D and 5DMk2 in big budget movies.
Your attitude is starting to piss me off.. i hate people who are patronizing.

Asking aquestion in these forums who some members find "dumb" or "retarded" is a big no no.. or?
I don't know anything about shooting film in big production, but you seem to know everything.

Toe, Truth be told there is no such thing as a "regular" movie camera. maybe 30 years ago, but these days what works is what works. So mny people shoot on DSLR beacuse its the trendy thing to do. For the longest time people wanted to shoot 24p, why… Because the other guy diit it must be better. They have no idea why they "Have" to shoot with widget A. Most people these days cant tell you why. Dont let the guy hassle you. I have seen and used many different kinds of camera for all sorts of reasons, hopefully for the right reasons. it does look fairly like a DSLR. Another truth be told most Movie cameras dont look like what everyone thinks they do. They are so decked out with gadgets and filters andcrap that when you see one naked its pretty un-impressive. Just remember its not what the camera looks like. Its how you look thru the camera that counts.

First step........ Take the lens cap off.

um as far as professionals are concerned DSLR shooting is not done because its trendy. every camera provides a unique characteristic to what is being shot. a DSLR offers small size and value making it an excellent crash camera to be destroyed for shots you dont want to risk your main expensive camera as well as being a super cheap camera to offer cinema like qualities after the correct amount of processing. as far as 24p is concerned that is because 24fps has been the standard for filmmaking for a very long time. and most cameras are easily recognizable as cameras the only extras you add are matte box, lens, rails, monitor, viewfinder, and film loader. not sure what extra junk you are referring to that makes it tough to recognize a camera as being a camera lol

just remember its not how you look through the camera its how you use ALL your tools. everyone looks through a camera the exact same way. with either the left or right eye...
