I got my Camera almost exactly 2 Months ago. In that time, I've taken around 17,000 Pictures (Video Shutter Also Included) According to Magic Lantern. Is that too Much? It's my first DSLR in a While, So for the first Month, I was just trying to figure it out again, Taking as much pictures as i could to learn. I'm not taking too much now, Id say roughly 1500 Pictures a Week. Is that still too much? I know the Shutter last 100,000 + from what i read, But in 2 Months, 17k seems to be a lot. I don't know. Any thoughts? When you first got your DSLR or a New DSLR, How many Pictures did you take in the first few Months?

Depends on what you're shooting. I put on maybe a thousand or so per month, usually less, but sometimes more. When I first got a dslr it was no different. Probably because I learned on film, and I'd say you learn more quickly when every shot costs :)

Shutter life can blow at any time, not just when it hits its top number (and sometimes not even then, just keeps chugging along). Just enjoy shooting :) If you start stressing about the actual capturing of an image draining the life of your camera, where is the joy in shooting? To answer your question, I shoot probably....1000 or so a month - but it really depends. I'm actually shooting MORE now than I did with my first DSLR, not the other way around :) The 5D3 is a blast to shoot with. The more fun I have in the process, the more shots I take.

It can be bad... are you actually processing all those files? That should have slowed you down somewhat. My BIL recently got his first dslr and went through 2k in a week. Once I encouraged him to run through lighteoom and pick out his favorites and process them, it slowed him down for two whole days. Not a bad thing to take tons of photos, just remember to put in time to process them. Good results should be a goal, not just volume.

^ Thats a good point - think more about the space on your computer for these files. If you are not editing them or are just keeping all of them, good and bad, you should go in and delete the bad ones, or ones that arn't good enough but not terrible. Keeping photos can be like hoarding, you get attached to them, you don't know if you should delete it even if its really not that great of a shot and no amount of PP will make it become anything  Just cold-shoulder delete. That can help you when you are actually taking photos, to keep in mind the amount of work you have to do after you get back home. Shoot often, but shoot meaningfully - thats my motto :) in other words don't just fire off to fire off. Think about each shot before you take it, not thinking about the number of the shot itself, but the end result. Thats more important than a shutter life worry IMO :D

I'm Definitely not taking as much pictures as i was a Month ago, I have a few Daily Favorites but i still come out with a bunch of good Pictures everyday. My thing is, I don't want to Miss a Moment, So i just hit the shutter button hoping for something good when something is going on, I know that's a Bad thing, But I'm only doing it because i'm still learning Manual mode and Exposure. From the 1st to the 9th this Month, I've taken 1,594 Pictures and that's after ive gone through and sorted the Blurry & Bad ones out.. So my Finger sensitivity has Definitely gotten better lol.

Edit: Space is not an issue, I have a 2 TB Drive for all my RAW Files. :D

I easily shoot 3,000+ for a half-day sporting event... I give no thought to the shutter count, but I'm guessing I am nearing 75-100k on my 3 year old 7D. If I want to press the button, I will press the button... If my camera dies, I will get a new one...

It's nice to be shooting digital. If you were paying for film and processing the cost would have bought several T3i's already. It makes the cost of replacing a shutter seem pretty reasonable.

Takes as many as you want, but I wonder how much time it takes to shoot and review, on average. over 280 pictures every day. When do you review them? How many do you discard? Do you do any post processing? I assume you're using high speed continuous a lot. When I first got into this I was taking over 2500 per months, but much of that was experimentation. I'm now much more selective when I'm out and about and shoot around half as much as I did before. Of that I keep maybe 20% or less and discard the rest. Periodically I purge even more. Don't know how I would manage 17K pictures in 2 months.

It will be, i fill ~2 x 2TB drives/year (1 is a backup)..although i shoot RAW+jpeg. I shoot 40-45k pics/year, so ~3500/month.

Probably most professional film photographers didn't approach take that many photos in their entire life. Why so many? How many do you look at or save?

At 40K in 3 months bigcountry will hit approximately 160K in a year. Your 40K is starting to look paltry. :)
