Ha ha were you thinking of Canon?

What are you looking to do with it? Print pictures or just documents? Do you need color? "Home printer" can mean a lot of things.

The three main brands are Canon, Epson and HP. They each have plenty of satisfied customers, although naturally you will also see some dis-satified customers with each of them as well.

If you want a dedicated photo printer you'd probably find more options with Epson and Canon. Just be aware of the fact that a whole lot of Research and Development has gone into photo printing, with an empasis on inks and paper, and the costs, especially with photo-dedicated inks, are considerable.

Some folks are quite pleased with a more general-purpose printer, such as an "all-in-one" copier/scanner/printer, assuming that it has "decent" photo printing capabilities. That type of printer is generally pretty inexpensive and uses less "demanding" inks.

Ok Tony, can you recommend a specific in each of the 2 categories?

I really can't, sorry! I have three printers, all HP, all from my years working at HP, none of them newer than 6 years old (when I left the company). I haven't looked at newer models from any of the major brands!

Is there anyone in Cascade Park that doesn't or didn't work at HP? :)

Heh! There were a few of us that worked there, but Cascade Park is a "gateway" to a lot of tech places going east and north, although HP was, I believe, an early one during that "growth" period. I believe that when I started there in around '91 it was already employing about 2,000 people.

Those were pretty exciting times -- HP was leading the way in the "Inkjet Revolution" and was also deeply entrenched in the "brave new" Internet world, while the World Wide Web was still just a university project in Switzerland!

I recently bought a Canon MG5350 and it's great. Print quality is very good (A4 only) and I can print directly onto DVDs, which was one of the reasons I chose it.

I have a Canon iP6310D and it's fine. It was very inexpensive and prints reasonably well. For fancy stuff, I have it printed professionally.

What drives me nuts is buying ink and cartridges. I always have a dickens of a time finding the exact cartridges I want. You'd think manufacturers could get together and create one standard but noooo....

I use two printers and would highly recommend both. First, for the best quality photo prints I use the Canon Pixma Pro 9000 Mk II (available HERE (external link) as a matter of fact!!) And for general printing with excellent quality photo prints I use the Epson Artisan 835 (external link)(Epson 837 Now).

I have a canon ip3600 which only cost about £60 and produces amazing quality prints.

I've got an HP black and white laser which has just started going wrong just outside its warranty period so i'd avoid HP!
