I purchased my 1st DSLR about 4 weeks ago (350D).

Due to my obvious inexperience I've ended up with two rather similar lenses.

EF 55-200mm F4.5/5.6 MKII USM (Bought brand new £200)
+
EF 75-300mm F4/5.6 MKII USM (Bought used of Ebay £90)

My dilema is this.........

I bought the 55-200 Lens brand new and still have a couple of days to return it to the shop if I want.

I'm thinkin about returning this lens and using the money to purchase a decent wide-angle lense such as the Sigma 10-20mm (open to other suggestions).

My question is this, Is there any significant reason as to why I shouldn't stick with the 75-300mm and trade in the 55-200mm ??

Thanks for your time

return it if you can. i think if you want wide, then that 10-22 is a good choice. liked by many here.

If you want the 10-22 thats a great lens. I've seen some excellent shots from that lens. There is a wide angle thread over at Fred Miranda that has some great examples of what that lens can do. Myself I'm waiting to see what happens early next year. I am waiting to see Canon is staying with the 1.6 crop for a little while longer before making my decision. As far as the telephoto end there is a 70-300 that costs just a bit more and has the 3rd generation IS. That lens would be better than either of the 2 telephotos you have.

Bugg; first fill in the rest of this question (honesly)

I really want to be able to take good pictures of _________

If your answer tends more toward Wildlife/Sports; then maybe now that you know about this forum you could sell both on ebay and go for a 70-200

If your answer is more about Landscapes and nature shots; then an ultra wide angle may be in your future.

If you're more of a people person (candids and portraits) then 10-22ish is too wide; you'll need something in the 16-40 mm range (quite a few to choose from) or you can get the 50mm 1.8 as a lens for now and start saving for others.

You've tapped into a good resource here; but you need to be more honest about what you really want to do/excel at for us to give you more solid answers :)

Do NOT tell us what lens you should buy or your crdit cards will be maxed before you know it :)

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply folks :)

Although I want to learn all types of photography in the future the area which I will be spending a lot of time in is Landscape and CityScape (external link)photography so I guess my decision in exchanging the lens for a wide angle would be beneficial.

Yes return it and buy wide angel Sigma.
the 10-20 is for 1.6x crop bodies only. you may go FF later on as you mentioned you will be doing Landscape photography more. so i think Sigma 12-24 should be best for you as it works fine on both 1.6x and FF camera throughout of its focal range.
