teleconverter help (looking for christmas gift)

Hi,

I have a friend with a 20D with the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens and want to buy her a Christmas gift. I'm thinking a teleconverter. How would the Tamron 1.4x SP AF Pro Teleconverter for Canon EOS work for this system?

How about the Will the Sigma 1.4x DG EX APO?

The Sigma 2x EX DG APO?

Not very well. Better off getting her the 50 f1.8 or something like that. Don't use any TC on that lens.

I don't believe that lens is compatible with either the Canon or Sigma TCs.

I have to agree with Jojo, the image quality certainly wouldn't be worth it out of this lens. Pretty good idea the 50 1.8 though, would be cheaper too I bet.

Only the Tamron will even fit that lkens,.. Do take Curtis' advice and read the info posted in the T-con FAQ.

I must agree -the 75-300 models would give very basic image quality with any TC.
While i haven't used a TC on that model ,i have used one of the better 100-300usm lens- even on that lens too the results were lousy

These lenses give rather decent image quality- maybe slightly better than the canon 75-300 lens does at it's longest focal length ,going by my tests.

While obviously not in the canon L pro lens class they are certainly usable

If you search ebay you'll also see a similar lens made by opteka. In theory it may give similar image quality but it would be best to avoid it untill proven.The model i linked is the only one i've proven to be OK

I'm looking for a gift for my friend and would like to give her something related to her fairly new-found photo hobby. She has:

Canon 20D
Canon 18-55mm EF-S lens
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Len
Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II Autofocus Lens
Canon BGE2 Battery Grip
Canon 580EX Flash
Expensive Carbon Fiber Tripod (name/model eludes me now)

I want to spend up to $300 and I need it by Christmas. Any ideas?

It's closer to $400.00,.. but...

If you get her the 85mm f/1.8 she will love you forever once she tries it out ...

However,. another good option would be a serious well made camera bag.. this would appeal to her on more than one level..

Look at Domke, Billingham.. etc... expect tp pay at least $250.00,. get one she can grow into.
If you get the right model,. it will be cherished fro a longer time than any gear you try to get fro the same price.

For that equipment list, a Domke F-2 would be a very nice fit, while still leaving room to grow. It's a design that's withstood the test of time, being something on the order of 30 years old (as is my oldest example of one!) with only minor tweaks over the years (now uses nylon and brass rather than chrome fittings).

For under $300 I'd consider the Canon 35mm f/2 or a Sigma 28mm 1.8 lens as they are closer to a normal view with the 20D.

On this particular zoom lens, I'd most definitely spend my money on another lens rather than on a TC. Or a nice shoulder holster bag like H-12 or H-14:

How about the Delsey Pro Bag 2? It has a tripod holder. Or the Pro Bag 1 is a bit bigger, how would that work out? She's talking about getting a couple more lenses to make like five total lenses. I guess the tripod ball-head needs to fit in the bag too.

Is the backpack type of camera bag an appropriate gift for her? I'd rather go with something that looks like a woman's handbag slung over the shoulder but for carrying camera and a couple of lenses.

Go to ebay and snipe you one of Canoga Cameras 50mm 1.8 kits. Comes with lens cloth, cleaner, lens wrap (haven't figured out how to use it yet) and filter. Cheap and fun and you might get lucky with your sniping program and score it for less than $80.00.

she already has the 50. those kits on ebay are mostly a sham in my opinion.

i second the bag idea, but the 85 1.8 is very nice indeed. well worth the extra 40 bucks or so.
