Canon T3i Video Problem

Hi!

I'm having an issue with my Transcend 32gb Class 10 memory card. Often when I try to shoot in both HD and SD a message comes up on the LCD screen right after I press record: "Movie recording has been stopped automatically."

-My memory card is not full.
-My camera is not overheated.
-I have not reached the 4gb recording limit when the message comes up--it comes up right after I press record.
-I have not found a pattern for when this happens...sometimes video works, sometimes it doesn't.

I've reformatted the card before to help fix this problem-and it worked. But if there are photos and videos I do not want erased from the memory card...is there a better, more efficient and convenient way to fix this problem? I know I can transfer the files from the card to my hard drive, but this is not always doable during a shoot.

Also, is there a more reliable memory card that can alleviate this issue (Sandisk...)?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks :)

How about trying another sd card? You can probably get a class 10 8 gb for 10 bucks, if that.

Had the same sort of problem with a class 10 samsung 8Gig card sold to me by the same shop I bought the camera.

Since got a sandisk 32Gig 45MB/s and had no problems.

Where did you purchase this Transcend 32gb Class 10 memory card? Transcend cards are often counterfeit. As such, in spite of aying class 10, they often don't measure up. Some are even relabeled class 4.

You might try a in-camera format but if that doesn't work, as others have said, try a different card and if possible make it one from a reputable source. [Not eBay and best if not Amazon]

Transcend who? Never cheap out on SD Cards. Stick with SanDisk. End of story. If you have Magic Lantern installed though, Your Bit-rate might be too high, Lower it and it should work.

Looks like Transcend most likely wasn't the best brand choice. I'll try a Sandisk and hopefully that will work. I appreciate all of the feedback. Thank you!

There isn't anything wrong with a genuine Transcend, the problem issue is with counterfeit cards, of which Sandisk is included. Go here http://reviews.ebay.com …ed?ugid=10000000001254879 (external link).

Thanks for the site. Where would you suggest is the best place/way to buy genuine memory cards? I wasn't planning on purchasing a new one online, but rather at Best Buy, maybe Staples. I bought my Transcend card at an independent camera store that I really like (it's also where I bought my camera), but I'm not sure I would buy another memory card there. Do you know if counterfeit cards can be mixed in with genuine cards, or if some stores get cards from maybe less reputable sources?

We ARE talking about manufacturing in China. So, is this question rhetorical?

Seriously, you should be able to count on a major retail chain such as Staples (I personally avoid BB, but for different reasons), but it is always possible they were defrauded. At the very least, I would expect them to stand behind the card and replace it if it can be shown to be counterfeit.

If you are using your T3i with standard firmware (e.g., no Magic Lantern), the fastest card you need for video is class 6. So, any properly performing class 10 card would also work.

However, the SDHC specs body did make a change in definitions between class 6 and class 10 besides the change in the bitrate. Classes 2-6 are specified with a fragmented card. Class 10 is specified with an non-fragmented card. Since fragmentation can slow things down, this may explain why your card works just after formatting but not as time goes on if you do things like delete individual images or video files from the card.

I've purchased all my cards at Best Buy, mainly becuase every week something is on sale; I think this week is PNY. Just make sure you get the better grade cards, I think an 8 GB "upscale" PNY is round $15 and a 16 GB likely in the mid-$20.

Next week will likely be SanDisk on sale.

SanDisk went on sale this week. Thanks.

Is 30 MB/s a good speed for HD and SD video?

Also, I don't quite understand the difference between the two memory cards below and whether it'd be worth the extra money...:

or

Thank you!
