Looks like a Coopers or Sharp-shinned...not a juvi because the eyes are yellow. I know the adults of both the Sharpie and Coopers have red eyes and the first year birds have blueish.

Are Cooper's hawks known to have white patches on the back of the head?

I photographed a first year Coopers Hawk (blue eyes) in my yard last Saturday and it has some white on the back of it's head. Not as pronounced as your Hawk but i'ts starting to show in my images.

I'm not an expert in Hawks and I've never seen a Goshawk in person but I've photographed my fair share of Coopers and Sharpies and tome this really looks like a 2nd or 3rd year Coopers...possibly a male due to it's size.

Great poses. The bird looks like it's in the shade. Lightening the bird and darkening the background would improve the shots.

These pics were actually shot through my kitchen window, and it was sitting on the rail of the gazebo. So, unfortunately it was in the shade. I will try the edits. Thanks!

Most likely a large juvenile female Cooper's Hawk. A Juvenile Northern Goshawk would usually show a strong supercillium. Better looks at the tail would clinch it for sure.

Regards,
Chuck

Have to agree with Chuck, it is a juvenile female Cooper's Hawk. Goshawks have a very pronounced white strip over the eye.

Thanks, Tom the Peregrineflier ;) Lyle Washington
