I don't do any stacking yet.
I usually match my ISO to my aperture, meaning that if I'm shooting f/8, I use ISO 800.
On dark nights with no moon, I can spread that gap and let more stars burn in.
If you're not stacking, make sure you use long exposure noise reduction in the camera. Do a test shot first though. Do an hour at your settings and see if you like it. If you do, turn it on and do another hour. I think in camera noise reduction does another exposure with the shutter closed so it can remove hot pixels, so if you do an hour shot, it does another hour shot so your camera will be unavailable for two hours.
The more north you're pointed, the longer you'll need to let it go to get long trails. If you point south a half hour will give you good results. Dead north and you might not like what an hour does.
