Is it possible to have a "like" button next to the photos on this site?? I'm guessing that more people would click on it rather than "quote and reply" to a post with a picture.
I know there are loads of pictures that I look at on the forum and not bother to comment but do find the picture appealing . At least with a "like" button, the author/poster could get an idea if of feedback by the number of likes?

Are we that lazy? If you like it, post a sentence saying so along with a specific comment. Its part of the give and take of being a part of the forum. Lets not dumb it down to facebook levels.

I not giving the "like" button a thumbs up or thumbs down, but a sentence could be positive or negative feedback, I suppose a like button (which I am all but certain vBulletin® Version 3.6.12 does not include) would be more like a poll that lets you see the overall reception to a photo.

Ok..... for starters, it wouldn't be lowering or dumbing down to Facebook levels or am I missing what you are trying to put across? If a picture on this site has had any sort of impact on me then I have left a comment/feedback for the poster. I'm guessing you do the same?
How many threads are on version (4, 6, 9??) because of people "quoting on a post" and then commenting on the picture, it tends to fill a thread slightly quicker (bandwidth) and it knackers the mouse wheel as there's a lot more scrolling involved :) What if your on a capped data allowance? wouldn't you be a bit annoyed downloading the same picture 2 or 3 times and eating into your allowance ?
Could a thumbnail pic be used automatically in a quote, so you can see the picture the poster is on about??

Like button is just an idea. You could call it the Cool button, or Impressed button... or that F****n button Foz thought of :o

I think you are missing my point. The like button as its used on facebook is pretty pointless. The likes you get on a post are devoid of content and worth about as little as the time invested in it. Even the most inane post gets a ton of likes. This forum is about sharing content and having a dialogue. If you like something say why, or say what you might have done differently. Its about contribution and collaboration, not the mindless pushing of a button that has little or no substance.

Very few. The threads that are on version 2, 22, or 46 aren't that long because of what people had to say about a single photo (or even a set of 8); they're that long because people have posted their own photos on a themed/subject matter thread, or offered their own comments on the photos, or have gotten into discussions about photo-related activities, or . . . Threads centered around an individual's themed photos tend to not run over 2-3 pages.

Pekka is developing his own forum software, by the way, which will "thumbnail" quoted photos; that's not something available in vBulletin, the current software.

Facebook's "like" clicking culture has gone bad a long time ago. It is not a fault of "like" feature per se. With Facebook people kiss a**es with like and want to shout "I'm a friend of xxx". Mostly.

I still think like is a feature that has some value.

There a many people who just browse forums for years and never seem to have enough to say in order to post. For them "like" is an easy way to express thanks or agreement.

In any case interpreting number of likes as means to value content is another matter, for that you have to read the actual post :)

Be shocked (or not), but new software will have [LIke this post] for posts. It's a small thing in all what is new there, and I put it there as additional way of participating and (perhaps anonymous way of) saying "I agree", not a philosophical statement or replacement for real replies. It's for members only.

For getting images more visibility, like is not the tool (except for whole posts with images). With new software there are other means to to that.

I'm looking forward to this. There are so many wonderful posts on this site and I've wished many times there was a "like" feature so the person taking the time to help could see how many people appreciate the time they took to help.

I've seen sites where there are both thumbs up and thumbs down, used as a way of agreeing or disagreeing with the poster's comment or opinion (this is mostly on sports forums, but you all have seen them). Frequently it is a way to show group disagreement with a comment that was inappropriate or mean spirited without inciting a flame war or getting some one banned when it could be used as a learning experience to hopefully get them to change their ways (yes, I know, they likely will not, but a few will) If a newb asks a question he/she should have looked for in the rules section and someone says "go google it" instead of showing kindness to beginner they would say get 40 thumbs down and 0 thumbs up. That is a better way of "dis"-encouraging that behavior that some one having to call them out in public or be reprimanded in private. What do ya'll think?

Well, no. "Do a search" is an expressly prohibited response here. From the Forum Rules (Section 4.9) "If you know an answer to a question either answer it or say nothing. Giving newbies blunt answers like "search the forum" is not allowed - please use the typing effort to giving the answer instead. Or just give the link to that post you wished the newbie should have searched for. Respect newbies - you were a newbie once."

Using "Like" or "Dislike" to run a member down, or to try to apply some sort of vigilante discipline runs counter to the atmosphere Pekka wants POTN to have. If you have a problem with a post, report it and let the Moderators, who Pekka has entrusted with maintaining order here, handle the situation.
