Ok..... for starters, it wouldn't be lowering or dumbing down to Facebook levels or am I missing what you are trying to put across? If a picture on this site has had any sort of impact on me then I have left a comment/feedback for the poster. I'm guessing you do the same?
How many threads are on version (4, 6, 9??) because of people "quoting on a post" and then commenting on the picture, it tends to fill a thread slightly quicker (bandwidth) and it knackers the mouse wheel as there's a lot more scrolling involved

What if your on a capped data allowance? wouldn't you be a bit annoyed downloading the same picture 2 or 3 times and eating into your allowance ?
Could a thumbnail pic be used automatically in a quote, so you can see the picture the poster is on about??
Like button is just an idea. You could call it the Cool button, or Impressed button... or that F****n button Foz thought of

Very few. The threads that are on version 2, 22, or 46 aren't that long because of what people had to say about a single photo (or even a set of 8); they're that long because people have posted their own photos on a themed/subject matter thread, or offered their own comments on the photos, or have gotten into discussions about photo-related activities, or . . . Threads centered around an individual's themed photos tend to not run over 2-3 pages.
Pekka is developing his own forum software, by the way, which will "thumbnail" quoted photos; that's not something available in vBulletin, the current software.
