The best use for on board flash- well, your model does not have it.

the best use for on board flash- is to trigger the external flashes wirelessly.

It seems the flash is the winner with all votes! Thanks to everyone for their input.

So my follow up question is whether in low light a 430ex flash with my 15-85 will give me as nice pics and flexibility as a 430ex flash with the Tamron 17-50 f2.8?

Should I try and get both eventually or it will not make much of a difference. Outdoors I love the 15-85 and find it a great range so I would not need the 17-50 except for indoors and low light.

With flash, the slight aperture advantage with the f/2.8 17-50 won't really mean anything (unless you also want very shallow depth of field; at the wider end there's not much difference between the 15-85's f/3.5 and the 17-50's f/2.8 (2/3 stop, if I'm reading the Wikipedia chart right), so you're only talking a real difference in max. aperture at longer focal lengths (2 stops at f/5.6 versus f/2.8). See here http://neilvn.com …h-photography-techniques/ (external link) for lots of great info. on using flash.

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

I used this combo for about a year with very good results. In the end I moved to a f/2.8 zoom because I preferred the shallower depth of field. In dim light you still need the flash.
