Hi all,

I currently have a 1D3, I'm wanting to replace this with a 5D3 as I no longer shoot sports and want FF as well as a slightly smaller camera.

My only real reservation is that the 5D3 isn't as well sealed/built as the 1D3, I'm not that rough on my camera, but I still would like to be able to confidently shoot in average rain/snow, and for it to be somewhat splashproof.

I know it won't be on the same level as the 1D3, but I read that they've improved the sealing from the 5DII.

Does anyone have any experience, how good/bad is it?

Thanks,
Mark

5D3 is about the same as 7D in terms of durability. How durable is 7D? The video below answers your question:

Seems pretty alright then! I imagine from that it'll handle normal rain without any issue...

Rainsleeve.
Or go buy a 1DX.

Regardless, if water gets into a 1DX or 5D3, they are going to summarily void the warranty anyways. I think a rainsleeve would be cheap insurance. Or better yet- get insurance on it.

Sorry, but water intrusion resistance has nothing to do with shock resistance of a body WITHOUT a lens on it.

I don't want the size of the 1Dx, or to spend that much money on it!
And I've never used a rainsleeve, because what I'm talking about is like, I'm walking with my camera, it starts raining, I don't have to go and hide because my camera will break.
Not like I used to do shooting a whole day of sports in driving rain, for that I very much agree.
All my gear is insured, but it'd be a hassle to deal with just because of a bit of rain.

This is true, I was more referring to the bit where they froze it, but the body cap isn't sealed so it was a kinda pointless test I guess. Also full immersion basically since the bag broke.

Yeah, most of mine are sealed...

I'm not talking any seriously hardcore weather, just some snow, and average rain. If it was heavy I'd probably be wearing a jacket and put it under that.

I saw that it was similar to the 1n, and IIRC at the time of that most of the L glass wasn't even 'sealed' but it all worked fine in non hardcore weather?

As long as you've got it insured and are fairly sure that your insurance company would pay up if it gets damaged by rain- then reality is that I'd be likely to trust that it's about as good as the 7D's weatherproofing.. But then if it's raining out heavily- I'd be looking for shelter anyways- did way too much field time in the Army.. Having uninsured gear is one thing- having it insured helps with peace of mind in case.. I am a little less uptight about things like theft, damage, etc now that I am insured for the lot.. It adds a lot of peace of mind- probably more than the rainsleeves do..

I would think that you would be OK with your weathersealed lenses- even the non-weathersealed ones up to an extent. Snow- as long as the body/lens was already about the same temperature as outside- would bother me way less than rain would. Light rain, not really concerned. I'd still try to protect it though- but insurance is there for peace of mind for this and other reasons. Even so, I really should add an umbrella to my bags..
