Hi,

I am thinking I might buy some seamless paper from Calumet (via Jessops - I have some vouchers to spend). I was wondering what colour to buy?
I do white BG photos of kids and the like, so Arctic White might be the obvious choice, but there are other colours and it might be an idea to "ring the changes" and plump for something different - get away from what some people call the "Chav-ground". :)

What do you guys think? I only have funds for one roll at the moment (2.72m x 11m), otherwise I'd buy 2 or 3 and a roll support.

Cheers

Buy white BG. By adjusting subject/light/background distance you can make it's shade anything from white to black.
Next buy color gels for your lights, this will lets you make the BG any color by putting gels over the back lights.

... Congratulations, you can now make the BG any color or shade you want, just by altering gels and playing with distance.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I have gels, or have access to whatever I want. Distance less so, although the studio is reasonable size. Was wondering how I would get a black BG with a white seamless, given I have 7m x6m in the studio...

Thanks

Tutorial here: http://www.zarias.com …rt-3-from-white-to-black/ (external link)

Actually, the whole 5-part exercise is probably the hands-down best tutorial I've found anywhere on the net that deals with lighting & backgrounds in studio photography.

7m is probably borderline possible for white to black. Important thing is to keep BG distance high, light-subject distance low, and grid your lights to prevent spill.

I just bought some inexpensive black fabric from IKEA for when I need a black background. I prefer to not have to struggle to keep the background black.

Depending on your budget, you might get a bit of Commando Cloth instead. I might do that eventually.

For other needs, I use plain white seamless, but I can't remember exactly which white I picked. Arctic White, Super White, Magic White, Snow White, Bright White, Extra White, .... ummm, sure.

Thunder gray. Very versatile. You can light it to get any number of shades of gray, leave it to black, or it accepts gels very well.

I have some black fabric which is fine, but not long enough for full length, but I reckon I could get more of that.

As for the seamless paper, Thunder Grey has been recommended, but the supplier I have here doesn't do that shade...but Storm grey should be fine. :)

Think I'm gonna go for the grey, anyway, as I can pretty much go both ways quite easily. I appreciate that Zack Arias can go from White to Black, but he does have a tad more space than I, and that does make a difference I reckon.

Thanks for the input folks. :)
