Going to the Rhine river section with those many castles. Many of them will have to be photographed either across the river, or from a boat.

I'm bringing the 5d2 and for long lenses I can pick either:

  • 70-200 f/4 non-IS
  • 200mm f/2.8 prime

I have both the 1.4 and 2.0 extenders but of course the 2.0 is kind of useless with the zoom (turns into f/8). The other lenses in the set stop at 50mm, except I will bring the 135L.

So my thinking is:
  • I need to bring the zoom because I can't control the distance.
  • I need to bring the zoom because on the boat I don't want to change lenses and/or put on extenders. Drop boink boink platsh.
  • I cannot use the zoom on the boat because the exposure time will be 2x longer and hence the vibrations from the boat's engine will cause motion blur.
  • For most of the other shooting (animals etc) the prime will be better.

I can improve the prime situation by dumping the 28mm in the set and bring the 85mm instead, so I would have 50, 85, 135 and 200mm. I'm thinking "digital zoom" for the boat shots might be the way to go, just use the 85 all the time on the boat and sort it out later.

Opinions?

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.

If I was bringing the 135L I think I would be comfortable bringing the zoom as opposed to another tele-prime. IS on the zoom would be helpful on the boat depending on your speed, OTOH you should be able to boost your ISO if you really need a kick up your shutter speed.
