I have ran into this issue several times over the years and I figure I would ask about it. I do a pretty good job keywording all my photos. When I want to view a photo, I typically search for it through my keywords. No problem. But sometimes I want to see several photos at the same time which have different keywords. But it seems I can only look at one keyword at a time. Isn't there a way to see my photos in several keywords at once? For example, if I want to print photos from different keywords, I find this especially awkward. It would just be easier to have all the pictures I want to print selected in my filmstrip across several keywords. I know I can select many different folders at once, but I usually don't remember what date I took a photo on. Yes, I can figure it out, but I would just like to do it from the keyword panel.

I think this will do what you want:

At the top of the Library Module, click on the "Text" filter, then set Keywords -- contains then enter your desired keywords separated by commas.

Another option is when creating smart collections....

As you add an extra criterion, hold done the option key. This will add the criterion as an "OR" criterion rather than the usual "AND" criterion.

Similar, you can exclude keywords by placing an exclamation mark (!) in front of the keyword. :)

Typically, Alt=Opt, yes.

Easy reminder: Ctrl (win) = Command (Mac), Alt (win) = Opt (Mac)
And, taking it a bit further, Right click (Win) = Ctrl click (Mac) ;)

I've lost all my keywords in Lightroom after I reinstalled my PC. Before that everything worked well. I had my keywords in LR and also in image properties of my shots (I thought that's where the keywords are stored - in images itself so they are safe). I reinstalled the PC and installed Lightroom 4.0 shortly after that. Opened it up and all the keywords have gone. Strange that keywords of my friends shots he's sent me so far showed up and are in image properties as well. Mine aren't.
Anyone has a clue what's gone wrong and how to prevent this to happen again in the future?

LR normally stores all changes to images in the Catalouge data file, this inclueds changes to the EXIF. For EXIF data LR will write that to files it exports, if that option is selected in the export dialouge. You can have LR write the EXIF data to the original file, I'm afraid I do not remember the command to do this as I'm posting from my phone.

CmdS, or set "write changes to xmp" in the prefs.

As to the missing keywords, Lightroom stores keywords in the catalog, and by default is set up to back up that catalog in the location of your choosing, although by default the backups go into your "pictures" folder (My Pictures in Windows) into the LR subfolder. So, did you have Lightroom back up the catalog when prompted, and if so did you direct it to backup to a place that you didn't "wipe out" when you reinstalled your system? If so, you can recover those keywords by opening the backup catalog in LR4. Then, you can do the "Save Metadata to File" and in your "current" catalog you can do a "Read Metadata from File and the new catalog will pick up the keywords.

Nope, I didn't have any backup, my stupid bad! Fortunately I tagged only shots from my new camera that I've recently bought so it can easily be redone as it's only about 100 images. I've checked the write changes into XMP file option and redirected the catalog back up into a safe directory.
THANK you guys!!!

Well, good that the "losses" were not overwhelming!

I have my catalog backups directed to an external drive where I also have my long-term library of images stored. I do "overall" backups to another external drive that is normally unplugged. My working catalog and short-term work is on an internal "data drive" seperate from my "system drive".

So, when it was time for me to install Win7 x64 on my previously XP system, there was no loss, just reinstall Lightroom and Photoshop, direct LR to my catalog on the data drive, and I was up and running!

Everything is working fine now. One more thing though. There is an option "Write keywords as lightroom hierarchy" when exporting photos. What does that do please?
