Sometimes spur of the moment shots are just that.

You are quite right, and this is a marvelous moment to catch, so cute...but there are other ways to diffuse the light, nevertheless as the pros would say, if it is between getting the shot or maybe missing it, take the shot no matter the circumstances...PP work might also help, dunno...

Well you can rotate the camera back to horizontal.
Or get a flash bracket.
But only us nit-pickers would notice the shadow, anyway. Most people would never get past those amazing eyes!

In this you are very right, but it is those details that other have pointed out that have really helped me out here, so I thought I would share...
