Take action photos with a G-series camera requires a fast shutter speed and a means to keep the camera very steady -- using a quality (like Bogen, Gitzo, or other) monopod or tripod. Flash typically has a working distance about 12 feet from the camera -- you may not be able to use it in the gym situation and would have to rely on available light -- meaning that the lens will remain open longer.

Don't use digital zoom. Turn it off. Digital zoom is a crime against humanity. Zoom as far as you can with optical, and then crop into it. Anything your digital zoom can do, your image editing software can do better.

If that's not good enough, try a camera with better optical zoom (S2IS ?), or look into a teleconverter for your camera. (check lensmateonline.com)

As far as help I think the comments above are something what I would've said.
