I just recently purchased the Canon Rebel T3i. Since I will be using it for film making, I was mastering the controls in movie mode. However, I can't seem to change the aperture on the camera. I don't have an SD card in yet. Is that the problem?

You do need to insert a memory card...But in addition you also need to select manual exposure in the Movie Exposure category in the camera's menu...Then apertures and shutter speeds can be freely chosen.

After selecting manual exposure in Movie Exposure press the Av button on the back of the camera and turn the control dial to change aperture.

When shooting photos you must also press the Av button in the same way before turning the control dial to change aperture.

I guess that's one way to keep the shutter count low.
