70-200 f2.8 IS MK2 - minor particle in lens element

Hi All,

Just wanting some advice...
I just purchased a new 70-200 f2.8 MK2 lens, and noticed that it has a small particle inside the lens (approx 1cm in) - because I didn't get back to the store to return the lens within 2 weeks, I'm told it has to be repaired and not replaced :(
- I'm worried that taking the lens apart will have an impact on image quality - sharpness??
- Are there any simple tests I can do to test the current performance, so I then perform the same test again when it comes back?
- Should I not worry about repairing ?

Thank you All.

Forget it's there and move on

Will not affect image or the lens weight

I wouldn't get it repaired either, there would be more of a risk getting it repaired

Yeah, if it's just a particle (like dust or something), don't worry about it.

I think this will be of interest to you: http://www.lensrentals.com …e-apocalypse-of-lens-dust (external link)

I bought mine in a brick and motor. Had to go through 4 copies before I found one without an air bubble in one of the elements. Same element in the first 3 copies. Looks like they had problems producing that particular one. I am sure it would have no effect in an image but since one with a bubble and one without costs the same, I decided to buy the one without the bubble....lol

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

I remember years ago reading an article that claimed that air bubbles in optical lens elements was a sign of good quality glass. Not sure what the logic was but it has stuck with me ever since.

Its absolutely true that small dust and or bubbles will have no measurable effect on the image. If I can shoot through chain link fences and not see the wire, then anything smaller is no problem;).
