Had sigma 120-300mm non OS for a yr side by side with canon 300mm f2.8 IS. And have friends who shot with both sigms zoom and sigma prime. Personally canon 300/400mm f2.8 are in different class and that is why you pay couple $ thousand more for them.

Fair enough, I agree thatI the Canon 300mm f2,8 IS is a jewel of a lens, but the question was about the Sigma. A bit like someone asking if a 60D is any good and getting answers saying a 1DX is better...

Though not a cheap lens, the Sigma prime is a very capable lens IMO.

I know the canon is a somehow better lens, but the Sigma is 3.600 dollars and the Canon is 10.000 dollars. (Swedish price)

Lifting this thread a little bit!

I am looking for a longer lens fpr my 5D MKIII.
I have the 70-200/2,8L IS USM (II) today, and also bot 1,4 and 2,0x Teleconverters, wich gives me 400/5,6 at the most today.

Looking at buying a used lens to get a little bit longer focal lenght. The Sigma 300/2,8 would give me 600/5,6 which I think will be enough for me.

But also been looking at the Canon 400/5,6 but seems that the Sigma would be a better buy?

Any thoughts?

If you're looking at the old prime to get out to 600mm, it might be worth looking at the Sigma and Tamron 150-600 lenses. They're newer, have image stabilisation and in the Sigma Sport's case can have the AF fine tuned using their dock. They're possibly also cheaper than the Sigma prime still retails for. As they natively zoom in to 600mm, they don't have a 2.0x tc affecting image quality and AF speed and accuracy. Also, for a much cheaper price than the Sigma prime in Australia you could get a Mk2 Canon 100-400 which with a 1.4x tc will probably more than match the prime.

Price summary new in Australia through a white market seller
Sigma 300/2.8 HSM $3525
Sigma 120-300/2.8 Sport $3550 (just an example to compare Sigma's two f/2.8 offerings)
Sigma 150-600 Sport $2460
Sigma 150-600 Contemporary $1276
Tamron 150-600 $1232
Canon 100-400 Mk2 $2566

The price of the prime IMO is utterly ridiculous when you consider it must be something like 10 years old by now and its only redeeming feature against the 120-300 IMO is lesser weight and size. I realise you are talking about a used lens but a quick ebay search (worldwide as there are none on the used market in Australia) pulls up only 3 listings and two of them set at prices higher than I could buy the Mk2 100-400 new.

i don't see why you'd go for the sigma prime over the 120-300Sport...newer technology, OS, dock capabilities, probably priced around the same as a used 300mm f2.8...and it's a good lens, here's a comparison of it to the 300f2.8 IS I from canon:

What I've heard it it a little bit sharper than the 120-300, especially with Teleconverters on...
And found one at a really good price, so bought it! I will see how it performs! :)

Congrats!

FWIW, after careful consideration I traded my Sigma 300 f/2.8 prime against a new Canon 100-400mm L IS MkII. I still have a high opinion of the Sigma, but found I wasn't using it while travelling and wanted something that had a wider range of uses.

Seems it needed to be Microadjusted (AF), but the range on my 5D MKIII is not enough (I put it on +20 but propably would need +25 or +30).

Is there anyway to fix this without sending it in for service?

i don't think so...you'll probably have to send your 5DIII to sigma as well...
