hello to all.
im back on here at last since moving to the dark side it does,nt seem right to post any more:(.

any way when i was a canon shooter i always wanted a 400mm f5.6.
but always going for a cheaper zoom and not realy being happy when BIF'S are in order.
well cutting a long story short i moved on from the 40d too the d300 + 300mm f4 more focus points to help get fast moving BIF'S.

thing's last year got tight for cash and yes i had to sell the f4:cry:.
ive not used the camera since last october as i have no other lens and nothing to tye me to nikon any more .

localy in a shope there is a mk2n at a good price and im willing to go back to canon only to get a similar af and after 7 years the 400 f5.6. :D

is it worth it.

many thanks nice to post on here again as this forum is where it all started for me.

MkIIn is a very good camera, with excellent focus. And since you're using it for birds, in the daytime I'm assuming, the limited ISO range won't really be a concern. I'd say go for it.

I have not had any experience with the 1D2N but have heard great reviews and have seen many images taken with this camera. I have also seen some BIF with the 400 5.6 as well and I would believe this pair would be astounding! Both fairly cheap(+/-2k for the both of them together) and do get the job done well! I can't say anything negative about the D300 as I've never used it, but I have seen some amazing results from the platform!

Wait, if you still have the D300, why not just buy the 300 f/4 again?
Were you not satisfied with the results?

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

That's exactly what I was thinking... I know it's a canon board and we all love them, but If you were happy using that cobo, why not see if you can find someone that was in your situation and needing to sell the lens. or just buy it out right. Just curious of what the price different would be for you buying that f4 lens again, even used from BH/Adorama, vs trading the cameras and getting the 400 5.6

---------------Camera, Lens, Flash stuff.. but still wanting more

Having owned both (and primarily a shoot a 1-series now), I'd keep the D300. 1.5X crop on the D300 vs. 1.29/1.30 on the MK2n. The extra resolution of the D300 gives you additional cropping capability as well.

The D300 is also smaller, lighter, and has a built-in flash for when you want to travel light, and have fill flash handy. It's probably one of the best values in a DSLR right now, for what they're selling for.

^^^This

OP:
GO FOR IT!! :D

Yea, if shooting during the day, which you will most likely be, I will grab my 1D2n over any other body...just for the AF..it.just.works.
but when it comes to low light/high ISO(which for me, the 1D2n is sketchy above ISO1000!!) I will grab the 1DsII or the 60D(especially).

I absolutely love this machine gun of a camera...I have owned 1D-1D3 and this is definitely my favorite model. for some reason the AF is better performer for ME than even the Mark III...even though on paper the Mark III should be better in every way..

AND, the buffer is great on this camera too...I NEVER worry about it..it has never slowed down on me. and yes, I only shoot Raw.
My 1DsII is HOR..R...I...B.L....Y ..... S......L...........O...............W :o

You will love it! (as long as you dont need high rez/very large prints! which is this models ONLY fault imho, though I am happily living with it!!)

Oh, and welcome back!!! Use the Force, Luke!
