Use Eli Skyport with 580 and 430 EXii - possible?

My scenario:

my 5D2 has the Skyport transmitter on it.

I've connected the Skyport receiver to the 580EXii using a sync cable - this flashes fine.

I tried using a cheapo optical slave on the 430EXii but it only fires once and then refuses to fire again.

I've tried setting the 580 to master and the 430 to slave but the 580 refuses to fire unless it is in slave mode, which means it's not sending any messages to the 430 telling it to fire.

Am I asking it to do the impossible? If it is possible can someone please tell me how to do it? :)

The reason I'm using the Skyport is that I'm also planning on using the Elinchrom Quadra as the main light and the two Canons as additional fill in light.

Note to self: don't leave until the night before to test it...

Method 1: I have been told the 580EX II will fire in master mode if you use a hotshoe adapter to connect the receiver, instead of the PC socket on the flash. Maximum shutter speed will be about 1/120, if memory serves.

Method 2: There are optical slaves designed for Canon EX flash units that won't lock up the flash after the first pop. Check with http://flashzebra.com (external link).

Method 3: Get another Elinchrom receiver and a hotshoe adapter for the 430EX II.

Canon flashes are picky about the optical slaves that hook up to. You will need a skyport receiver for each flash or one of the Canon compatible optical slaves like this.

The sync port is turned off on the 580 when in master mode.
