If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Wondering how you cinchers handle a heavy lens? Do you let the heavy lens dangle from the mount? When I had the cinch I hooked it up to the lens collar but wasn't all that happy with that

Tried it with a 15 pound birding setup, and at that amount the strap starts to stretch and sag. Really did not like the feel of it, and worried that I was causing damage to the strap. Went back to my Luma Loop.

Teaser - we are using screw gate quick links that are way smaller than the ones you've seen and made by the company in France that invented the carabiner. They are quite beautifully made and I think they will help make the Cinch the *most* secure camera strap on the market. The system is absolutely bulletproof.

Sweet!!!, need pic or it's not real.:cool:

15lbs? Wow!

What is the setup you've got?

We overbuild our straps for strength, but the actual design parameters for the Loop was a flagship SLR body running the nice 70-200mm glass, for about 9lbs of total system weight. That is sort of the break point we found with most of the photographers we work with for something they would (and/or would *want*) to carry on a strap for an extended period of time.

It is totally possible to make a bigger shoulder pad that would distribute the weight of a larger camera. We feel that it is important to make such a strap a separate model (95% of camera users have a rig that weighs in at about 4.5-5lbs, all the extra bulk would negate their experience). As anyone who follows this thread knows, the quick release development has taken us far longer than we ever anticipated, and we made the decision to solve that problem once, in a highly adaptable fashion that would support a series of future products built around the Cinch quick adjust concept.

I would say that you can anticipate to see a strap from us that can carry a 15 pound setup "Soon," but nothing ever happens on schedule for us!

Sweet!!!, need pic or it's not real.

So, this is the prototype quick link we received overnight from the factory in France. It is roughly 25% smaller than the smallest quick links you generally see being used. Unlike Chinese built quick links you in the hardware store, the Péguet Maillon Rapide links are built to life safety and aerospace standards; this part is just on another level of quality than anything else out there. This little guy is individually certified (and stamped) to a working load limit of 110lb with a break limit of 550.

Special for us, Péguet is hand smoothing the gate nut so there are absolutely no sharps or edges that could scratch your camera. I can scrape this thing full force against the plastic screen of our poor testing Canon 20D, and it doesn't leave a mark.

These little Maillon Rapide links are bejeweled quality parts and the more we've tested them, the more impressed we are. I watch this forum closely and we've seen all the concerns that folks have about camera strap systems failing (hence all the tethers and other additions people feel the need to make). With these links (and the other components that make up the Luma Link system), our goal is to absolutely eliminate any paranoia or fear that your strap will disconnect, and do so with a compact set of hardware that leaves as little hanging off the camera as possible.

This is my temporary solution to the QR system until Luma comes out with their system. I bought 1/8" chain links at the hardware store, wrapped the links in heat shrink and used the Op-Tech straps to connect to the camera body. This allows me to quickly remove the vertical grip and attach the strap to either the body strap point, or to the tripod base that came with the Luma strap with another one of those rubber loop thingies from Op-Tech.

QUOTED IMAGE

I've been using quick links for some time and find them very secure. I wrapped mine in heat shrink to reduce the possibility of scratches and to make it look less industrial. I'd love to use some self-centering triangular split rings and get rid of the Op-Tech straps.

Self centering split ring you say?

Nikon one on the top, the Luma prototype on the bottom. The one in the pic is a bit crooked; the part got tuned yesterday to run perfectly (3D wire work is *super* finicky). Ours are stainless steel, the Nikon one is nickel plated steel. They both hold about 150lb on a pull test.

As for the new QL (Quick Link), I like :)
So I hope you price it so it is competitive to the ones you can by at the local big box hardware store - - yep seen SS versions there in various sizes and online.
Can't wait to see it in action and size.

Less is more from my point of view, I love the orignal Cinch. I would hate having all that quick release gear clanking around and getting in the way.
The original design is sublime in its simplicity, hopefully it will still be available, otherwise I'll need to stock up.

I wouldn't worry.

There are too many folks who want something super simple, and there are way too many cameras out there with funky connectors or that are configured in really wacky ways. As such, we will basically always offer a version of the Cinch with straight up 3/8" (or 10mm for you folks running a real system of measurement) end connectors.
