I've searched for a few days now, looking for a free codec that will allow me to view the preview/thumbnails of CR2 files in Win7...can't seem to find anything. Surely someone has found a work-around for this??????

Surely someone has found a work-around for this?????? In addition to the previously suggested Microsoft codec package, Canon also provides a free codec that works on 32-bit computers: http://www.usa.canon.com …ftware#DriversAndSoftware ben_r_ wrote in post #14869024 There a reason something like this has an advantage over just using management/post software like Lightroom? Of course. A codec allows you to use Windows Explorer to quickly preview raw files without having to run additional software like Lightroom. Doesn't Finder have similar functionality?

Anyway it only shows thumbnails and opens another application when you click on a RAW file (by default OSX's own 'preview'). Preview is not an effective way to sort or cull images, at least it isn't in my experience.

Before that I used Photoshop and Bridge. I'm a huge supporter of Lightroom and I've used it since its first beta over six years ago. But I also recognize that its not the most efficient way to work since you have to wait for it to cache the raw data and render previews. There's no delay when using a codec since it uses the JPEG preview embedded in each raw file. Bridge is faster than Lightroom since its a file browser as opposed to a database like Lightroom. Preview is not an effective way to sort or cull images, at least it isn't in my experience. I can't say about Windows Explorer but I know my wife uses Windows 7 and opens DPP to preview/cull images. Windows Live Photo Gallery may work perhaps? For a quick preview without having to open another program a codec works just fine for me but I guess it depends on your needs (I shoot hundreds or even thousands of photos at a time). Windows Explorer show thumbnails in 4 user-selectable sizes so its simple to glance at an entire folder of images. If a larger view is needed, double-clicking a thumbnail opens up Windows Photo Viewer to view slideshows in a full-screen mode. Finder works exactly like Windows 7 in this regard except Apple provides regular OS updates with codecs while with Windows the user has to choose to install a codec.

This is the only viewer I use any more, as it has so many great features. There is a thread about it here. I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
