I've searched for a few days now, looking for a free codec that will allow me to view the preview/thumbnails of CR2 files in Win7...can't seem to find anything. Surely someone has found a work-around for this??????

There a reason something like this has an advantage over just using management/post software like Lightroom?

Not really, but the OP wanted Free and the suggested option is ... well... free.

Why not just use the software that came with your camera? DPP and Zoombrowser?

In addition to the previously suggested Microsoft codec package, Canon also provides a free codec that works on 32-bit computers: http://www.usa.canon.com …ftware#DriversAndSoftware (external link)

Of course. A codec allows you to use Windows Explorer to quickly preview raw files without having to run additional software like Lightroom. Doesn't Finder have similar functionality?

No idea, Ive never used anything but Lightroom to view my RAWs since it came out. Before that I used Photoshop and Bridge.

Finder does have that capability but to be honest I never use it to check out RAW images. Anyway it only shows thumbnails and opens another application when you click on a RAW file (by default OSX's own 'preview'). Preview is not an effective way to sort or cull images, at least it isn't in my experience.

I can't say about Windows Explorer but I know my wife uses Windows 7 and opens DPP to preview/cull images.

Windows Live Photo Gallery may work perhaps?

I'm a huge supporter of Lightroom and I've used it since its first beta over six years ago. But I also recognize that its not the most efficient way to work since you have to wait for it to cache the raw data and render previews. There's no delay when using a codec since it uses the JPEG preview embedded in each raw file. Bridge is faster than Lightroom since its a file browser as opposed to a database like Lightroom.

For a quick preview without having to open another program a codec works just fine for me but I guess it depends on your needs (I shoot hundreds or even thousands of photos at a time). Windows Explorer show thumbnails in 4 user-selectable sizes so its simple to glance at an entire folder of images. If a larger view is needed, double-clicking a thumbnail opens up Windows Photo Viewer to view slideshows in a full-screen mode. Finder works exactly like Windows 7 in this regard except Apple provides regular OS updates with codecs while with Windows the user has to choose to install a codec.

Since raw files aren't rendered image files, your OS doesn't natively recognize them which is why a codec is needed. Windows Explorer comes with the Windows Imaging Component which provides the hooks needed for the codec to be integrated into the operating system.

Windows Live Photo Gallery no longer ships with Window 7; its an optional download. Personally I use BreezeBrowser Pro (external link) from Breeze Systems to cull my photos. It is based on the Canon SDK and provides the best renditions outside of DPP, since unlike Lightroom it can read all the in-camera settings. For me, Lightroom isn't an optimal tool for culling since there's a wait to import, cache, then rebuild raw previews and it only uses four in-camera settings (ISO, White Balance, aperture and shutter speed) while tools like BBPro do it instantly and read all the in-camera settings.

Aw man, well I decided what the heck and installed the Microsoft Camera RAW Codec and it works fine with all of my .CR2 files, except I have pretty much none of those as I convert everything to .DNG which is cant preview! LAME.

However, the Adobe DNG Coded worked just fine for those: LINK (external link)

Faststone viewer is free and will allow you to view the imbedded jpeg in a raw file. This is the only viewer I use any more, as it has so many great features. There is a thread about it here.

+1 for Faststone, it's brilliant, been using it for years. A facility for HDR would be nice though.:)
