One of my other pastimes besides photography is weekend yardsales. Recently I bought a box of old computer hardware and software for $10. I hadn't really gone through it until this past weekend. In the box was an original CD-ROM in its jewel case, of Adobe Photoshop 3.0 with the serial number included. I installed on an old Win98 machine I had just to be sure it was good and in working order.
Now I'm thinking maybe I should be able to upgrade to CS2 since Adobes site states any version of PS can be used for the upgrade and all that is needed is the serial number from the previous version.

What I'm not sure of is if I might run into any problems if the software may have been previously registered, which I have no way of knowing. Would Adobe possibly needed further proof that I have "purchased" and in possession of the original CD and serial number ?

If it's too good to be true, it probably is:rolleyes:

When I did this (upgrade) you needed a later version -- I believe it was version 5 or newer in order to qualify for a CS upgrade. Otherwise it worked fine. You will need to check closely with Adobe on this as my information is a year old. Also, I believe you only needed a valid Serial number of the old version.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have PS6 with a valid serial number I think. How can I tell if it is valid? I got it from a college friend several years ago and never installed it before but came across it the other day. If I can get PS CS2 for $150 vs PSE4 for $80 I will go the CS2 route. However, I don't want to throw away $150 for CS2 upgrade if I can't upgrade. Any Thoughts?

Just for the heck of it go to Adobe's site and see if you can register it. I tried this with the V3.0 I have and it said it didn't recognize the number and to contact customer service which I plan doing. If the software has been registered previously this may be a way of finding out. If your copy registers online I would think you'd be good to go. I don't know if previous owners of software have to "unregister" it to make it useable for others that came into its possession.

any version (even 1.0) is eligible for an upgrade to CS2. If you are upgrading from version 5 or earlier, you will need to call customer service so they can walk you through the upgrade installation. cheers!

When I go to their site I get this error:

Error! .An exception has occurred: java.lang.NullPointerException

Any ideas? Do I need to call Adobe?

Maybe my browser handles the link differently. If you go to Adobes site http://www.adobe.com/ (external link) , click the tab for Purchase and then Customer Service. A menu to select product registration will show. Follow that and see what happens.

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. I tried to send in the information and the error is what I received after pressing the continue button. What now?

Can't help on the error. I tried entering a number and it kicks back an error stating the number is in error - not a java error. You'll probably end up calling like I'll do. Adobe - (800)833-6687

I just tried to enter my serial # from ps7 and its 1 set of #'s short for cs2. i have 5 sets vs. 6 for cs2. I may try my elements 2.0 #'s for the 4.0 upgrade.

Are you using the CD key instead of the serial number perhaps?

I think I lost you on this. Are you saying that of the serial number, of the blocks of 4 numbers, that you only have 5 blocks rather than 6 ?

1------2-----3------4-----5------6
1234 5678 9012 3456 7890 1234

In a thread somewhere I think you can get the full serial number from the drop down help menu in the PS program, if that helps.

I just got off the phone with Adobe. The rep assured me there would be no problem using PS V3.0 upgrading to CS2. He checked the serial number and it is registered to someone other than myself, but as he stated this only affects tech support for the V3.0 product and not an upgrade. He further stated if I needed the support for V3.0 I could contact the original licensee and have a license transfer done, which ain't likely as I probably wouldn't be able to find the original owner/licensee. Can't envision needing tech support for something I probably wouldn't use:rolleyes:. The Adobe rep said I'd have to call in the V3.0 serial number as it was an old one and not recognized by newer software.

Anyhow I head to Newegg to see what they get for a CS2 Upgrade package. I notice in the reviews someone that is not particularly happy with Adobe. Only lends to further skepticism about an upgrade. Makes me think it would be best to purchase directly from Adobe to avoid issues of trying to return opened software if the upgrade can't be done.

"Beware Older Versions

Pros: Should be a great product and is a great price....

Cons: Will not load on my system. I have Photoshop 5.0 running on Windows XP Pro and when I go to load it I get a message:
"Can't find your version of Photoshop 5.5 or higher". That wasn't on the package... More »
or on this spec sheet. It reads:
"To install this upgrade successfully, you will need a licensed version of Adobe Photoshop CS or Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or earlier, on the same platform as this purchase." To my understanding 5.0 is earlier than 7.0. Don't even think of trying to contact Adobe. I sent numerous emails. They are far too important to talk to their customers!!!

Other Thoughts: Maybe a class action suit might help. Face it the package says:
"This upgarde version will install only if you are a licensed user of a previous version of this software product". I don't see 5.5 or higher in the text, do you?

NewEgg is still great, Adobe marketing lacks.
