In October I am leaving for Spain for 5 weeks. I will be taking my 60D with a fistful of SD cards. For image backup I will be taking a HyperDrive Colorspace UDMA. Since this is the first time I will be traveling extensively with a DSLR & a photo storage device, I would appreciate some feedback on my plan for image file management.

Having said that ... my goal is to make the uploading of all the images into my computer as efficient as possible. I envision my tentative workflow (while on the road) to be as follows:

I plan to create a separate folder on the memory cards for each day of shooting. This will allow me to do a couple of things: (1) incrementally back up the new images on a memory card at the end of each day into the Colorspace UDMA & (2) make any notes pertaining to each day's shoot.

When I return home, I will upload all of the images into Lightroom 4. Since each day's images will be in a separate folder, I can import them into LR as such. This should greatly facilitate keywording & organizing the images in LR.

Does this seem like a reasonable workflow or might someone suggest a preferable alternative?

Thank you kindly for your thoughts.

If you are thinking of creating folders 'Day1', 'Day2' etc and have your camera write images directly into the subfolders, I don't think you can do that!

If you are thinking of copying images from CF into subfolders on the portable backup device, that can be possible (based upon the capabilies of the unit -- I don't have Hyperdrive, but my own portable storage device definitely allows me to copy CF images into subfolders on the harddrive.

Wilt: When the SD card has been formatted, the 60D will create a single default folder (100CANON). In the Menu, I can simply create any number of additional folders (not subfolders) which will automatically be numbered sequentially (i.e. 101CANON, 102CANON, etc.). Then I simply select any of these folders into which captured images will be stored. In my case, I'm thinking to allocate one folder per day.

Given my goal (as stated in my original post), I don't know if this will be the best plan for me.

I think you are intending to keep your images on your SD cards after uploading them to the Hyperdrive - if so then you'll have two copies of the images. If you are thinking of formatting the SD cards after uploading them to the Hyperdrive then I would suggest getting another Hyperdrive as a second backup. In either case keep the SD cards/Hyperdrive separate just in case some light fingered wretch / accident causes loss of both media.
Enjoy the trip!

do you have the On The Go kit for the Hyperdrive? Allows you to do a second backup to a USB device from the Hyperdrive after your initial backup off the card even on the road. I believe the Hyperdrive will also write back to SD Other SD/CF cards.

Having said that, your plan is fine and gives you a decent workflow. Dont buy any cards that are too new (or at least test them) as the Hyoerdrive does not support the latest SDXC cards (hardware limitation, so dont expect a firmware update either).

If you can read this, you don't need a macro | 7D + 5DIII + Waaaay too much spent....

Yes, I intend to keep the images on the SD cards & use the HyperDrive as a backup. Thank you for the well-wishes.

No, I don't have the OTG kit. The sole backup onto the HyperDrive should be fine.
