I have been asked to shoot an engagement session at a baseball game. I don't feel comfortable with this because I dont think it will be easy to get an intimate feeling in a crowded stadium.

I wouldn't know where to begin pointing my camera into the crowd might be deemed to disruptive.

Anyone have any experience with this type of request?

nope, but make sure the venue allows it at all. (I'm guessing you'll want to use a dSLR and normal lens)

I can think of many cool shots but Dan makes a good point.

Be sure they allow commercial photography on the premises and be sure you can provide proof of liability insurance.

I would love to do an engagement session at a stadium. Here is an engagement session someone posted awhile back at a hockey game.

I'd suggest them renting access to the stadium for a private session. A lot of stadiums allow it, but it's just a question of cost.

I am super cool n' stuff.

I agree, sounds awesome.

I would think the point is to have your engagement photos during a game with packed house.

Since some of you guys seem to think this is a good idea would you care to share why your approach would be? I haven't the slightest. What kind of gear/lenses? Has anyone done this before?

I wonder if you'd be able to arrange for them to meet with some players for pics for the engagement.

Call the team PR people :)

That's a great opportunity to expand your engagement portfolio. Don't pass if it's allowed.

I saw the first recommendation for a normal lens.

I'd go for the 70-200 or maybe something longer in a prime. Then you'd be able to be farther away and not attract the attention of all the folks in the immediate area.

Definitely scope the venue ahead of time...Where will the betrothed be sitting? Where can you set up and still be able to see them and compose the shot?

Sounds like a fun shot. I'm trying to figure out how to do a "Save the Date" shot with one of the pair being the ultimate baseball fan.

1D-III with stuff to stick on it:
70-200L, 28-70L, 24-105L, 300L, 50, 10-17 fish, 2.0x TC
Image editing OK, encouraged, and expected. Thank you for helping me learn!

Might be a little too packed for a tele. Personally, I'd want to stay normal to wide so I could get close and intimate photos. My top selling wedding/engagement images are those that make the viewer feel as if they're actually standing there, and that's not often achieved with telephoto focal lengths, IME.

2 years ago, I did one in Toronto at the Skydome / Rogers Centre... Whatever they call it these days...
I emailed the team first, got permissions, made arrangements to show up early, not many people around then. Had access to parts of the field near 3rd.
We also got kickass seats, courtesy of the Jays (or more precisely, one of their PR guys) but we didn't stay in our seats long. We went to the 5th deck, most of it is off-limits at most games, and had great down-angles to the field. Went to various areas, it was a blast...
Flash was allowed, but only on-camera. Everywhere we went, someone escorted us and really helped move people and cut in some lines... Lots of cheering from the beer lines whenever I posed them and asked for a kiss or a 99% kiss...

24-70 and 50 1.4 and 135 was all I had brought, on a 5D2 and 40D

I know Tony Hoffer did one at a Philadelphia Phillies game. See if you can track that one down for examples.
