As I am finding I like sports shooting, I just traded in my 60D today for a 7D. One of the first things I noticed is that I like the grip on the 7D better than the 60D. It seems to have just a little more depth for my fingers. While I am obviously still learning it, the AF was noticeably different with the 7D too. With that said, I can tell that I am going to miss the articulating screen and the lock on the mode dial from the 60D.

Image quality wise, my first set from tonight looks the same to my eye. Hope this helps or at least gives you something to think about.

Funny. I avoided the 7D when it came out as too expensive and overly complex for my needs. I jumped on the 60D when it was released. Two things about it I really don't like: the articulating screen and the locking mode dial. One man's trash....

Thanks for the inputs I have thought of getting another 40d but I am worried about buying something this substantial second hand. I am no closer to making a decision then when I started this thread :(. I like landscapes and macro shooting the best. But still like to shoot birds and my daughters soccer games. If that helps guide any of your recommendations.

Thanks again for all your inputs.

I'm a novice and 7D would be good for that mix. And it really is beautifully built.
Sure can be mind blowingly complex but you can save 3 types of shooting to C1, C2, & C3.

Then its the best of a preset 'configured' camera ready for point and shoot!

About the only thing the 60d has over the 7d is the flip out LCD screen. Great for compositional purposes.
The 60d is also easier to learn with.

I had some issues with the 7D I had, it kept under or over exposing at the same settings and mis-focussing a fair bit, so I got a 60D and I've not been happier. The 60D does everything it should every time I press the button. I use it a lot for aviation where reach is paramount and get some great photos from it.

I just upgraded from a 60D to the 7D and I'm extremely happy with my decision. Only thing I will miss is flip out screen for video but in all honestly that is all but 1% of when I use this camera so goodbye ;)

Now just trying to sell mine to make up for the upgrade.

I think you hit it right on the head and that is what is so awesome about all the different models out there right now. I think it also supports renting or at least going to a retailer that will let you put your hands on and play with the models you are thinking about.

I can't say that I was disappointed in the 60D performance but I wanted the better/faster AF with high school football and soccer season coming up in my area. When considering the used 7D I picked up included a grip, 3 OEM batteries and an EOS Count of 2298 for an out of pocket cost of $475 after trading my 60D and it was a no brainer.

I bought a nikon last night at best buy after losing my D70 (bought new years ago) along with all my lenses (two). Though I was very depressed for a while, and I did not have any glass to keep me married to nikon, I decided on the D3200 two lens package out of loyalty (?) and because of the wireless capabilities (the plug in module). After talking to my neighbor who has massive amounts of Cannon lenses -I mean he has like everything and I can borrow whatever whenever, I am about to take the Nikon back for a Cannon. I am on the fence with the 7D or 60D as well.

I am a novice... I understand many of the DSLR / SLR concepts but in practice I am very new. I would like to start learning again and taking some pictures as I miss working in photoshop on high res stuff and would really like to get started again with great hi res photography vice the point and shoot stuff I have been using for about a year... iphone and the like.

Just thought I would throw a post in here. My neighbor will sell me a tamron 2.8 constant 28-100 (I think?) this is the focal range, but the f2.8 constant I am sure about for fairly cheap. I feel that the 60D would suit my needs and I believe I would like the articulating screen for the video use, but what would one think about just getting the lens kit 60D for a general carry lens???? Just get the body?

Dont mean to hijack as I am sort of still on the fence about the 7D, but this may just be too high end for my needs. I would definitely only be able to afford the body and this is still stretching my budget. Thanks!

7D ergonomics and controls are most similar to your 40D( joystick, etc.), whereas the 60D is a hybrid mix.. between the 7D and Rebels (60D has rear control dial, top LCD). 60D has onboard flash commander, as does the 7D, so..that's a wash.

As has been said, for fast-action, BIF, sports, the 7D's AF system and fast 8FPS burst are better. The 7D also offers you MFA, to dial in any lenses that are front/back focusing ( although this seems to be less of an issue with 60D bodies, weirdly). 7D also has some weather sealing. Mag/alloy body, while nice sounding, mostly means heavier.. not necessarily stronger.

I almost never shoot video, but have a bad back, and the articulating screen is such a joy.. when i'm shooting on tripod- mounted really low, or high, etc.

Mode dial lock.. some find it a pain, depends how much you shuffle between modes (i'm so used to it, i hit the lock button now, without even knowing it.. no problems). It is a PITA though, if/when you accidentally knock the mode dial, and take a shot.. in the wrong mode. While not a frequent occurrence for most, the lock does prevent this, and can be the difference between getting the shot.. and missing the moment.

So.. it comes down to cost, action, and ergos. Only you can make that call

if you want the 60D go for the T4i
and if you dont
go for the 7D

I completely disagree.
while the IQ may be the same between the two, the 60d has the top screen and rear dial that make serious shooting faster and easier. The t4i is a very nice camera though.

between the 60d and 7d obviously the 7d is a better camera. faster FPS, more AF points, micro focus adjust, and weather sealing are all better than the 60d.

however, the 60d is a fantastic camera.
if you think the 60d cant do birds, take a look at my Flickr page in my sig. And I shoot with a 100-400 which are thought to be less sharp than the prime lenses.
I should put some of the sports stuff I have shot on my flickr too. the 60d does a great job at that too.

but if I were to choose one overall and price was not an issue it would be the 7d.

A completely mis-guided and unhelpful statement. I own, and shoot, a 60D and a Rebel. They may have very similar IQ, but they are very different cameras. And neither of them is a 7D.

So I am getting divorced ....

I gotta say- if I was facing those first 5 words- I'd be thinking :

"Gosh, she already has the 40D". How could I one up her a step or two- and still keep as much for myself as possible ? Let's see.. Buy a 5D3! Or the 7D ! Hey! you might as well have at least a good camera out of the deal!

Unless the divorce is finalized.. Yep- I'd get as much as I could possibly get.

what sold me on the 7D over the 60D initially, was the grip, viewfinder size and FPS.

Articulating screen would be nice but not my top 3 must haves, the above were. I had xti, and t2i, and always hated the small viewfinders and awkward feel of the camera in one hand. Price was a factor back then, but now, I can pay the extra for better.

You already have some decent glass, my advice would be buy the best body you can afford. Don't be gun shy on buying used or refurbished, just make sure you buy from a reputable source. You should be able to find a lightly used 7D for around $1000. Personally I didn't have any trouble adapting to the 7D, I switched from a T1i to a 5D MkII in Dec. 2012, then added a 7D in the spring.

You lucky dog! I wish I had a neighbor like that!

I have placed you questions in bold type as I am having a hard time understanding them. The 60D comes with an EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 lens as a kit. This is a typical "kit" lens. Nothing to be embarrassed about but nothing to brag about either. As far as the Tamron that he is offering it sounds like the 28-105 mm f/2.8. Here are some opinions of it: http://www.fredmiranda.com …owproduct.php?product=242 (external link) Although it has the constant f/2.8 aperture, that 28 mm wide end is a little long for my needs. I would prefer the Canon kit lens. Just my opinion.

Canon EOS 7D | EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM | EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS |
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM | 250D | EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM | 580 EX II |
