I was about to order Lightroom 4 then discovered the reference to 64 bit. My PC is 32 bit. Is there anyone on the forum using a 32 bit computer for Lightroom?

It does have a Nvidia 9600m GT graphics card.

I believe they only made it for 64 bit.

Thanks CameraMan. Maybe I should have also asked for recommendations for alternative to Lightroom that will work on my computer,

Or upgrade the CPU and MB on your computer so you can run LR4. :)

It's a 4 year old Acer laptop and just not worth spending money on it. It will probably need replacing within the next twelve months.

I might stick with DPP and Faststone until I replace it. I was thinking, if I bought the software on disc, I could use it on a new computer when the time came.

Ah... thought it was a desktop. A laptop you'd have to replace the whole thing. Too much of a pain to upgrade MB and CPU on a laptop.

I have a Windows Vista 32bit system on a Dell Laptop with 4gigs of ram running Lightroom 4.1. Works good, but can slow down and become sluggish at times when dealing with RAW or large files.

I guess it does come in 32 bit versions but I've heard that it doesn't run very well. Kinda slow.

looking at the Adobe Photoshop website, (link below) only Elements 10 is suitable for 32 bit computers. I'm not sure I want to purchase software that will struggle to work properly on my computer.

I think I shall stick with DPP and Faststone until I upgrade. I want to upgrade my camera before the laptop. I already have 2 laptops, one running 24/7 attached to my weather station.:)

Many thanks guys for your advise.

LR4.1 runs just fine on my Dell 32bit Vista Laptop with 3G RAM. not only that but it is running from an external USB2 drive.Yes it can slow down a little if I am doing lots of work with the local adjustment brush. In that case I tend to just restart LR. I have to say that the computer is starting to show its age and struggles a bit anyway, I think it may need to have a full reinstall as there is a lot of stuff on there that isn't really needed any more. I have less than 3GB free left on C:.

Download it from Adobe and run it as a trial version, it works fine on my netbook that's a few year old Acer that is right at the minimum requirements, not anywhere near as fast as my desktop that can run LR, PS and 8 other things and not hiccup; but it still functions, and the demo is a great way to feel out the workflow and make sure it all works for you before committing to it.

I believe they only made it for 64 bit.

Not so. LR 4.1 runs fine on my 32-bit Dell laptop with 4 GB of RAM, which was not super high end even when I got it a year or two ago. It's not terribly fast, but not a great deal slower than 3.6 was. I second the suggestion of downloading a trial.

it may work on 32bit PC but it will not install if you don't have OS Vista or later...so anyone with XP will need to upgrade thier OS and in some instances this will also require upgrading the PC Hardware to suit the OS.....I blame Microsoft......

Well, XP is well over a decade old at this point, absolutely ancient in terms of computers and operating systems. Expecting a current Adobe release to run on XP at this point would be like assuming CS4 should run on Windows 3.1.

Not to mention any 32bit OS (Windows or anything else) can only address 4GB of total RAM, and these Adobe programs are memory hogs. There are some definite limitations by not moving on to something like Win7 x64.

XP maybe relatively old, but it still works and is stable and reliable enough for most purposes and is still used by a lot of people. In some instances its proves to be more user friendly and reliable than the later versions of Windows. Not everyone can justify upgrading OS on top of software and then probable hardware needed...If it ain't broke don't fix it......besides which LR3 and CS5 worked with XP so why shouldn't LR4 and CS6...Are software writers in cahoots with the OS writers to force upgrades on us and then are OS writers in cahoots with hardware manufacturers.....If the costs of these upgrades were kept relatively low then there probably wouldn't be a question, but some software has new versions out every year and this makes them not very cost effective for small business, ameteurs and home users, only large corporate organisations are really in a position to upgrade everything at a regular frequency. Some of the upgrades do not even have significant changes or improvements to justify full version releases and in some cases may only have one or two desirable additions making it uneconimical route designed to put money into the software companies bank and not provide something that the end users require.
