This is a 50mm Mk 1 lens I'll be looking at, and the ring is cracked. How bad is that assuming nothing is rattling and the glass looks good? Will this affect usability? It's a decent distance away, so I'm trying to figure if driving that far will be a waste of time or not. Thanks!

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

That shows the lens has taken a hard fall or been knocked heavily against something. The damage to the exterior housing wouldn't worry me so long as it can still mount a filter and hood. But I'd be concerned about the interior bits... it won't necessarily show up as something rattling inside or be something that can be seen by looking at the glass... But there can be decentered elements inside a lens that's had a hard bump, effecting every image made with it. It would have to be a great deal for me to consider it. I'd want to take a bunch of test shots to be sure it's still working properly. I try to keep it in reasonably good shape, but don't worry very much about the cosmetics, just about the performance of my gear.

I would definitely pass on that unless

  • it's being literally given to you
and
  • you're spending less than $10 on transportation to get it.

Alrighty then, you guys confirmed what I thought. It was $50 including an EOS 850, so I was very tempted. I'll keep shopping!

Yeah, just keep an eye out because these deals pop up every now and then. It's not a good idea to buy a discontinued lens since it's sometimes impossible to find parts for it. Buying a damaged, discontinued lens is just a bad idea all around.

For $50 I don't see where you could go wrong.

Even at $50, I decided against the 2 hr drive for it. There will be others.
