Here is a screen shot of my file system for my lightroom catalogue. Over the years I have had big problems with losing photos and at this point who knows what I did to find them. But when I look at this, it seems really unorganized and inefficient. Everything is on my internal hard drive in the picture folder - and you can see how it unfolds from there. Does this look right to you? Should I fix it somehow? Through keywords, I can find all my photos, but it just seems like a mess here. For example, the picture shown at the end can also be found in the 2008 folder in the first column. Should I do anything?

Depends, Does it bother you? If you can find everything using keywords and aren't bothered about it not being personalised I would just leave it. Some people like well ordered files while others don't mind it.

I made the mistake of not correctly importing files into LR4 and now I really have a mess..atleast you can find things with keywords.

Looks like you imported the images into LR using "Copy" and allowing LR to make a folder structure based on date, instead of "Add without moving". So now all images are on the HDD twice.

Not a huge issue, but takes up quite a bit of HDD space ;)

Let me recommend a DVD by George Jardine. If you dont know who he is, he worked for adobe in creating LR1. He knows LR inside out , upside down and then some. Seriously, he will have you set your Catalog up correctly, so you will not be running into the problems your running into now. Should add he has two DVD's one for the Catalog and the other for Develop module.

Here's his link. http://mulita.com/blog/ (external link)

It kinda looks like an iPhoto catalog, too - where it sorts everything by "roll" and by date. It took me a weekend to get my old iPhoto content moved and integrated into Lightroom, but SO worth it after it was done.

You have to come up with some sort of hierarchy and structure that works for you. Mine is generally organized by content type, then by client or event. For instance, "Family>Christmas 2012" or "Events>Concerts>Taylor Hicks 20110408" or "Portraits> Jones, Tina 20120801"

This works reasonably well but not perfectly. I still use collections and keywords to organize things in additional ways.
