Love this lens, but it's amazing that a tiny bit of stopping down make a huge difference. It's okay at 2.8 but at 3.2 it's super duper sharp... or is it just my copy...

Mine's nice and sharp wide open. It does get even sharper and perhaps a bit contrastier stopped down slightly. I often shoot it wide open when using my 1D Mark III, and at f/3.2 or f/4 on my 5DC.

It's not small or light by any means, but it's a great lens.

I have never been happy with mine. My 24-105 is sharper with both lens at f/4. I have been considering sending the 24-70 in for service.

Lensrental has an article on lens age...in short, the 24-70L can get soft over time. Send it in.

Yep, that's what got me thinking about sending it in. Thanks.

I may go for the mark ii after reading reviews and such. But the lack of IS is tough... so we shall see! The 24-70 is one of the few lenses around that price I have not used.

Our 24-70/2.8L is softer than say, our original 70-200/2.8L and more so than our 70-200/2.8L II.

Is it objectionable? Not really, a quick application of Smart Sharpen to images on input generally corrects the issue.

I'm begging Canon to start selling the 24-70 L 2.8 II. My copy of the 24-70 L 2.8 is not sharp at all. Especially at 24 and 70mm.
