Well... it depends... I used to be in your situation, a college kid major in Computer science with an XTi, I destroyed it by pushing the CF card too much and bent the pin.... So what I did was... get another one using amazon with install payment. Well, I had a job so I could make payment, not sure about ur case... 50mm prime is good, to be honest, it was my only lens for a year and I had no complain.

The 50mm 1.8, for what it is, really is a fantastic lens. I still toy around with it on my 5D Mark II from time to time.

Think of this as a blessing in disguise. To make a photograph, you only need one camera and one lens. By not relegating to a zoom lens, your photography can be greatly improved by your mastery of the 50mm focal length. You are now being forced to think more about composition and other factors in creating a great image.

I say hold off until graduation and see what you can make of the 50mm lens.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

I would agree to this, however, many do legitimately find that 50 on crop is a little on the long side.

Some do. I think it's worth a year's experiment, though. Especially for a poor student.

Along with the fact that used kit lenses will always be available. Maybe even get a upgrade with some graduation money.
