Some shots captured during the Targa West Malaga Special Stage, Perth AU which took place around an industrial estate. My first time shooting a motorsport event and I have to say I've caught the bug - I really enjoyed it.

Thanks to the marshals for being great and very helpful.

Hope you like them! Comments welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks a lot to you both. It was my first one, won't be my last, totally fell in love with the Ford GT. Would like to make more stages next year as I really enjoyed the cars, the noise and the photography.

If that was really your first time for MotorSport then I'm even more impressed, nice and sharp and the panning shots have just the right amount of motion blur. Only crit on the panning shots would be that they could do with a little more space in front of the car to 'drive into'.

Pick of the bunch for me would have to be the evo and the mustang, both are pretty much bang on.

.DAVID.

Thanks David, much appreciated. Concerning the side on pans, no 1 and 3, they were at 1/40 and 1/50 respectively, though far more comfortable at 1/60 and 1/80 in truth.

Before this the only cars I've shot were at a rally school experience day that I got for my wife, but panning her doing 15km/h was not comparable the this event. :D I mostly focus (pun wholly intended) on aircraft and birds, in truth.

Totally take on board your comment re giving the subjects space to breath in the fame, I should have got that better in some of them.

Thanks again for the feedback, once again, much appreciated.

You obviously assumed the cars were just 'fast birds' and applied your expertise to racing. Very well done.

Don't mind at all, great shots too. Was a fantastic event, great selection of cars. Be there next year, for sure.

These look great. Did you use the 5d3 for them? Wondering how good the focusing was for shots with the cars coming straight at you at high speed.

Thanks! Well between us we had 2x7Ds, a 60D and a 5DIII. The 5DIII performed just fantastically and I used that for all my shots I've posted, more of which (esp the 5DIII in action) can be seen here (closer shots, cars headed straight at us):

https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=1174446&page=13

And for pans, etc, here:

https://photography-on-the.net …ead.php?t=1174446&page=10

In between these pages in the thread linked you'll find the other camera in action too, all of which also delivered from Kx and UF.

We had a ball - hope that comes across.

In truth, back to your question, the AF on the 5DIII is just magical. True that these were not particularly taxing subjects for the AF (pans are more a photographer technique thing) but I also just the 5DIII for birds in flight, aviation (inc. very fast pans) and its a dream to use all ways round.

I've not been quiet on this forum about my opinions of the 5DIII, so why start now? :-)

You considering one then?
