The 5Diii is a fab camera no doubt about it but that stupid rubber shutter blind is very annoying. The 1D's have a nice built in blind which is simple convenient and effective. Having a piece of moulded rubber attached to the strap maybe OK for XXXD series camera but surely on a camera of the quality and cost of the 5Diii we could have had something a little better?
OK rant over, any users got any more elegant solutions they could share?

My T-90s had built-in blinds. I never used them and I've still never used the rubber ones.

Caring about something I will never use is a moot point to me.

If the XD line had it I'd use it for sure. If not to avoid light entering, at least to avoid dust ;)

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

I have also always disliked the cheapskate Canon viewfinder cover and only use it on very rare occasions. Waaay back when I used Nikons (FE and FA) they always had proper little metal shutters, very simple flat metal blades but easy to use. I've never investigated the 1D or 1Ds models enough, do these all offer proper shutters?

Yes, the 1D series cameras have a lever on the side of the viewfinder that will operate an internal shutter that closes to block light. If you have a camera other than a 1D, just use your hat and hang it over top of the camera and viewfinder just before you make an exposure.

It's strange how a small thing like this can become annoying out of all proportion.

Until I got a 7D, I didn't even notice the non spring loaded battery cover on my other bodies. Now, it annoys the nads off me. Mind you, about 95% of everything in the world does...
