When all else fails I know I can always get a few shots of these guys. Everything else was a bust this a.m., but I was happy to find the waxies in their usual spot...

Nice series and detail. I have never gotten the feather detail to come out on these guys. Always so smooth looking. What setup did you use?

Hi...These were shot using the 7d and the 100-400 IS L.
I believe I shot at 1/1000, ISO 400 at the full 400mm...the morning light was soft so I was able to catch some feather detail. Also, I think these are juvenile birds, don't know if that would effect the feather smoothness you mentioned but it may play into it a bit.

Lucky you Mike, not only you found them in their watering hole, they gave you some really nice poses. Beautiful set!

Great shots Mike. I can never seem to get that close even with 400mm and it really helps to bring out the detail as your images show.
