I just picked up a Canon 400 2.8 IS. Right now, I am planning to use it with a Winberley Sidekick mounted on a Vanguard head. I was going to pick up a Wimberley plate for the lens, but they don't make one - only the replacement foot, which renders the foot useless for carrying.

I know RRS makes a replacement foot and plate, but I'm not sure if it is truly compatible with the Sidekick.

Any other options?

Any of the replacement feet (from the top manufacturers) are designed to be Arca compatible so should fit fine. If you are uncertain contact Wimberley - they are VERY helpful.
Just a thought, I use the 600 F4 IS (about the same weight) on a Wimberley 2 with the original foot and this setup is superb. I didn't go for the Sidekick as I wasn't certain it was fully up to the job, again I would check it's suitable and check whether you need a new foot for your 400.
Selling your Sidekick and not buying a new foot would go a long way to covering a Wimberley 2 - Just a thought.
Have a look here http://www.tripodhead.com …idekick-compatibility.cfm (external link)

Haven't really thought about it that way, but I think even with a Gimbal, I need a A/S foot or plate of some sort to mount the lens. I guess most of them probably come with one for use.

I had a RRS replacement low profile foot for my 200 f2 as I couldn't reverse the hood with the original food. It worked perfectly on my sidekick, for whatever that's worth.

does naturescapes.net have a foor for 400mm f2.8? I had one for 500mm f4 and it was nice. Only issue was when hand holding with that low profile foot.

Forgot to mention I had a pre IS 400 F2.8 - that didn't need a replacement foot to balance on the Wimberley 2. You will need a quick release plate, but they can be quite cheap. I have QR plates from Kirk, Wimberley, Sirui and a number of other Chinese makers - all are absolutely fine.
