here is my situation. I have a T2i, 24-105, 70-200 f4 is, 40 2.8
I have been shooting weddings as a second shooter for over a year. I have done some weddings for friends as the primary. Now i want to take a step forward and buy another body. Do I get a 5d mark ii now or wait to see if a new FF comes out in September ? another photographer asked me to be his second shooter based on my work but when he found out i use a T2i he said my equipment simply would not do to work with him. Now he liked my work until he found out i use a rebel (thats another story) If I buy now and in a mth a new body is announced i will have paid too much for the mark ii, if i wait i will miss some work. The rumors of a new entry level FF are killing me. help.

My guess is that he was concerned with ISO performance.

The 5DIII is an excellent camera for weddings. I doubt that a new full frame camera positioned below the 5DIII would have much to offer that a 5DII doesn't offer now. It is also a good wedding camera.

Given your lenses, you will need a camera with good ISO performance. I routinely use F2.8 lenses for indoor shooting and my F4 24-105 for outdoor, mainly because it has a nice focal length range.

If you are missing out on work because of your camera, consider that the lost income is effectively raising the price of whichever camera you eventually buy. Business economists call it "lost opportunity cost".

The problem is you can never wait long enough. I would say if you are making money at this then its a no brainer. Get a 5D II you will love it. As dmward said a 5D III is even better if you can afford it.

A full frame body, pretty much any of them would help with two things. Better ISO performance as mentioned by David, and your 24-105 becomes and actual wide angle lens, also useful for weddings and event work. Unfortunately the rumor sites are notoriously wrong on what might be coming, so its hard to base any decision on that. A 5DII will certainly be a serviceable camera for a long time if you decide to go that route. Even if a new full frame model drives the 5DII price down a bit, you can always sell at a slight loss and have had several months use of the body.

Maybe. But my guess is that when he tells you which lens to walk around with, he doesn't want to worry about the math in his head re the crop factor etc. And he likes the smoothness of the full frame files. (Although he'd still be delighted if you were using a 7D). And he wants the customer to believe even his second shooter is also a professional.

Who knows. But I'd get a 5D2 sooner than later. And maybe a fast prime like a 50 f/1.4 or a 17-40 which is nice at the reception to get great dance floor shots up close and personal.

Hmmm, interesting thought. I've never even considered telling a second shooter working with me which lens to use, only a suggestion about what it would be helpful for them to shoot. i.e. " Can you get started on room details"

As for ultra wide, the 17-40 on a crop camera is not really that wide. The F4 max aperture is also problematic in low light for focusing and ETTL metering. 16-35mm F2.8 is my go-to lens for dancing.

Absolutely the 16-35 is preferred. But (a) I doubt he's going to go out and spend that much money to be a second shooter initially and (b) I have seen plenty of professional wedding photographers use the 17-40 with flash. And no I did not mean to suggest he use the 17-40 on a crop - that's why I said buy the 5D2.
